Kandy is the cultural heart of Sri Lanka — the last royal capital, home of the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, and a 500m-altitude lake-side town where the climate softens from coastal heat to a permanent spring.    Tea-covered ridges south of the city. Drive up at sunset for the layered-hills view back over Kandy.

   60-hectare gardens — orchid house, the giant Javan fig tree, avenue of royal palms. Best late afternoon.

   Man-made lake built in 1807 by the last Kandyan king. Loop walk is 45 min with the classic temple-and-water view.

   Sri Lanka's holiest Buddhist site. Aim for puja at 5:30am, 9:30am or 6:30pm. Cover shoulders and knees.

   Kandy Cultural Centre (dance)· 1 hour

   Hour-long traditional Kandyan dance + fire-walking performance daily at 5pm. Touristy but legit good.

   Forested ridge behind the temple — birdwatching trail, monkeys, cool air. Skip during/after rain (leeches).

   88-foot white Buddha overlooking the city. Steep tuktuk ride up. Best panoramic view of Kandy.
