Route map

At a glance

Galle is the south coast's old colonial port: a walled Dutch fort jutting into the Indian Ocean, narrow lanes of boutique shops and restaurants, and a string of beaches to the east. Two days is enough to walk every street inside the fort, hit Unawatuna for a swim, and watch the Koggala stilt fishermen at golden hour. Day trip-able from Colombo (2 hours on the expressway) but better as an overnight.

Highlights

  • Galle Fort ramparts — UNESCO World Heritage, walkable in 90 minutes
  • Galle Lighthouse — Sri Lanka's oldest, built in 1939 on the fort wall
  • Unawatuna Beach — calm bay, great for first-time swimmers
  • Jungle Beach — small, tucked-away cove with reef snorkelling
  • Koggala stilt fishermen at sunset — iconic south-coast scene

Day 1 — Inside the Dutch Fort

  1. 1

Galle Fort main entrance (Old Gate / Clock Tower)· 30 min

Enter via the Old Gate near the bus station and walk the cobbled main street north-to-south. The clock tower marks the highest point of the ramparts; climb up for orientation.

  2. ~3 min walk · 0.2 km from stop 1

    2

Dutch Reformed Church (Groote Kerk)· 15 min

Built in 1755, one of the oldest Protestant churches in Sri Lanka. Free entry; the tombstone floor is the unusual feature. 15-minute visit.

  3. ~4 min walk · 0.3 km from stop 2

    3

    Galle Lighthouse· 30 min

On the southern tip of the ramparts. You can't climb it but the wall around it is the best photo spot in the fort. Crowded at sunset — be there 45 minutes before.

  4. ~2 min walk · 0.1 km from stop 3

    4

Old Dutch Hospital (shopping + dinner)· 2 hours

Restored colonial hospital, now a row of boutique shops and restaurants (A Minute by Tuk Tuk, Pedlar's Inn, Lucky Fort). Best place for an early evening cocktail and dinner with sea breeze.

  5. ~3 min walk · 0.3 km from stop 4

    5

Ramparts walk at sunset· 1.5 hours

The 3 km walk along the top of the fort walls — start at the Old Gate, end at the lighthouse. Pack water; there's no shade. Locals come up here at 5:30pm.

Day 2 — Beaches and the fishermen

  1. 6

    Unawatuna Beach· 2 hours

20-minute drive east of Galle. Calm, crescent-shaped bay protected by a reef — the most beginner-friendly swim on the south coast. Get there before 9am if you want quiet sand.

  2. ~5 min tuktuk · 2.8 km from stop 6

    7

    Jungle Beach· 1.5 hours

Tucked-away cove on the next headland west of Unawatuna. 15-minute walk through the jungle from the trailhead. Good snorkelling; bring your own gear or rent at the beach (~Rs 500).

  3. ~3 min tuktuk · 1.8 km from stop 7

    8

    Japanese Peace Pagoda· 45 min

On the hill above Jungle Beach. Short uphill walk; quiet, with sweeping views back toward the fort. Free entry. Best in late afternoon when the heat eases.

  4. ~24 min drive · 14.0 km from stop 8

    9

Stilt fishermen at Koggala· 45 min

20 minutes further east along the coast road. The fishermen pose for tourists on the stilts now — bring cash (Rs 500-1000 per group photo is reasonable). Go at golden hour (5-6pm). Ignore the touts; just hand cash directly to a fisherman.

  5. ~32 min drive · 18.4 km from stop 9

    10

Maritime Archaeology Museum (inside the fort)· 1 hour

On the way back, if you have an hour — exhibits on Dutch and Portuguese shipwrecks in the bay. Easy to pair with a final fort-side dinner.

Where to stay, eat & fly

Local tips

  • Stay inside the fort if your budget allows — boutique heritage rooms ($80-200/night) put you in the cobbled streets at night when the day-trippers have left. Otherwise stay in Unawatuna and tuk-tuk in.
  • The fort is busiest 10am-3pm with day trippers from Colombo. Walk the ramparts before 9am or after 4pm for photos without crowds.
  • Driving is easy: the Southern Expressway from Colombo is the fastest 2-hour drive in the country. Tolls total ~Rs 850.
  • Avoid swimming at Galle's main town beach (Closenberg) — there are reef rocks and stronger currents. Stick to Unawatuna or Jungle Beach.
  • Galle Cricket Stadium hosts international Test matches — if you're a cricket fan and a match is on, the fort ramparts double as the cheapest viewing seats in international cricket.
