Day 1 — Iconic Ella in a day
- 1
Nine Arches Bridge· 1.5 hours
20-minute walk down from Ella town through tea bushes. Trains cross 6 times a day; the 9:30am and 3:30pm are the most reliable. Get there 20 minutes before for a spot on the slope. Tea-and-roti stalls at the trailhead.
~6 min tuktuk · 3.7 km from stop 1
2Little Adam's Peak· 2 hours
Easiest of the hill-country peaks. 45-minute up, 30-minute down. Three steep stairway sections, then a grass summit at 1141 m with a 360° view. Best at sunrise (5:30am start) or sunset.
~3 min walk · 0.2 km from stop 2
3Flying Ravana Mega Zipline (optional)· 45 min
550 m zipline off the side of Little Adam's Peak. ~Rs 6,000 per person. Brief but spectacular — best in the late afternoon when the light is on the hills.
~7 min tuktuk · 4.1 km from stop 3
4Dinner at Cafe Chill or Café One Love· 1.5 hours
Ella town main strip. Cafe Chill is the long-running classic (good curries, occasional live music); Café One Love is smaller, more intimate, vegetarian-friendly. Either is a 5-minute walk from anywhere in town.
Note: Start early — both Nine Arches Bridge and Little Adam's Peak are cooler and quieter before 9am.
Day 2 — Tea country: Lipton's Seat and the scenic train
- 5
Lipton's Seat· 2 hours
1.5-hour drive south to Haputale, then 30 minutes more up the tea estate road. Best at sunrise — leave Ella at 4am. Sir Thomas Lipton's personal favourite viewpoint; on a clear day you can see seven provinces.
~9 min drive · 5.0 km from stop 5
6Dambatenne Tea Factory· 1 hour
Original Lipton factory from 1890, still working. 30-minute guided tour: plucking, withering, rolling, fermenting, drying, grading. Buy single-estate tea ~Rs 600-1200/100g. On the way back from Lipton's Seat.
~37 min drive · 21.6 km from stop 6
7Train: Ella to Demodara· 1 hour
Catch the Ella → Badulla or Ella → Kandy train for the 30-minute leg to Demodara (where the famous spiral loop is). One of the world's most scenic train rides. Hang out the door if you must; just don't be the person who falls off. Schedule: roughly 8:30am, 12:30pm, 3:30pm.
~13 min drive · 7.4 km from stop 7
8Ravana Falls· 30 min
25 m waterfall right on the main road, 6 km south of Ella. Climb the rocks on the right of the falls for a better view; don't swim at the base (slippery, current). Crowded with locals on weekends.
Day 3 — Ella Rock hike and slow morning
- 9
Ella Rock hike· 4 hours
Harder hike — 3-4 hours round trip, with a navigation-tricky stretch along railway tracks. Best to hire a local guide at the trailhead (Rs 1,500-2,500). Start at 5:30am to summit before the clouds roll in. Pack 2L water and proper shoes.
~5 min tuktuk · 2.9 km from stop 9
10Brunch at Newburgh Green Tea (Halpewatte)· 1.5 hours
On the way back from the rock. Tea factory tour + a verandah with the best lunch view in Ella. Try the kottu and a pot of single-estate Halpewatte BOP.
~8 min tuktuk · 4.5 km from stop 10
11Ravana Cave (optional)· 1 hour
Cave with a viewpoint and a short Buddhist temple. Steep stairs up. Skip if you've already done both Adam's Peaks and Ella Rock — you'll be staired out.
~6 min tuktuk · 3.6 km from stop 11
12Sunset at Ella Town viewpoint· 1 hour
There's a small lay-by 200 m east of the main strip with a clear view down Ella Gap. Free, quiet, and the right way to close out three days in the hills.

Local tips
- →Book the train Kandy → Ella (or Colombo → Ella) in reserved second class at least 30 days ahead via the Sri Lanka Railways online portal. First class observation cars sell out 60+ days ahead.
- →Hire a tuktuk for the day in Ella for Rs 2,500-3,500 — cheaper than per-trip rates and the driver knows the trail shortcuts.
- →Ella nights drop to 12-15°C in January-February. Layer up; most guesthouses have no heating.
- →Phone signal is patchy on the hikes — download offline maps (Maps.me or Google Maps offline) before you start Ella Rock.
- →Skip the 'free' tea-tasting touts on the main strip — they're commission sellers. Buy directly at Dambatenne or Halpewatte factory shops.
