At a glance
Adam's Peak, known locally as Sri Pada ("Sacred Footprint"), is a 2,243 m conical mountain in Sri Lanka's central highlands, revered by Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims and Christians alike. The headline experience is a night climb of roughly 5,500 steps to reach the summit temple before sunrise, when pilgrims watch the sun break the horizon and the peak casts a perfect triangular shadow across the cloud sea below. This 3-day plan uses Hatton as your gateway and the village of Nallathanniya (Dalhousie) as the trailhead base. Day one eases you into the cool tea country with waterfalls and reservoir viewpoints, day two is built entirely around the summit climb and recovery, and day three explores the temples, lakes and colonial churches scattered through the Dickoya–Maskeliya tea estates. Expect chilly nights, frequent mist, and a region where Tamil estate culture, Sinhalese Buddhism and old British planter history sit side by side. Pace is standard with one demanding night, so build in rest. The climbing season runs roughly December to May; outside it the path is dark, unlit and dangerous.

Day 1 — Hatton arrival, waterfalls & tea country drive
- 1
Hatton Town & Railway Station· 1 hour
Most travellers arrive here by the scenic Colombo–Badulla train; it's the main supply and transport hub for the region. Stock up on cash, snacks, a headlamp and warm layers before heading into the estates, as Dalhousie has only small shops. Grab a quick rice-and-curry lunch at a local eatery near the station.
~18 min drive · 10.5 km from stop 1
2St. Clair's Falls· 45 minutes
Often called the "Little Niagara of Sri Lanka," this wide three-tier fall is best viewed from the roadside viewpoint on the Hatton–Talawakele road. Morning light gives the cleanest photos before estate mist rolls in. There is no entry fee at the main viewpoint, just a short walk to the railing.
~9 min drive · 5.2 km from stop 2
3Devon Falls· 45 minutes
A 97 m single-drop fall framed by tea slopes, viewable from a dedicated café-viewpoint a few kilometres past St. Clair's. The terrace café is a good coffee-and-photo stop, with the train line visible across the valley. Best in the afternoon when the sun is behind you.
~46 min drive · 27.1 km from stop 3
4Maussakele Reservoir Viewpoint· 45 minutes
This large hydro reservoir on the road toward Maskeliya offers sweeping reflections of the surrounding ridges, with Adam's Peak itself often visible on the horizon. Stop at one of the pull-ins along the lakeside road for photos. It's a quiet, uncommercialised spot ideal at golden hour.
~11 min drive · 6.6 km from stop 4
5Nallathanniya (Dalhousie) — Trailhead Village· Overnight
Check into your guesthouse here, the closest base to the Sri Pada trailhead. Eat an early dinner and rest, since the climb starts around 2 a.m.; most guesthouses serve simple rice-and-curry and can arrange a wake-up. Confirm the climb timing and pack water, layers and a headlamp tonight.
Note: Settle in early and sleep before midnight — Day 2 begins in the small hours.
Day 2 — Night climb & sunrise summit
- 6
Sri Pada Trailhead (Nallathanniya Route)· 3-4 hours up
Start the climb around 2–2:30 a.m. so you reach the top before the roughly 6 a.m. sunrise. The first stretch is gentle and passes the illuminated Japanese Peace Pagoda before the steps steepen sharply. The path is lit and lined with tea and snack stalls during pilgrimage season.
~4 min tuktuk · 2.4 km from stop 6
7Tea & Kottu Trailside Stalls· 30 minutes
Roughly halfway up, small stalls sell hot sweet tea, plain tea, kottu and snacks to fuel the steepest section. Stop for a warm drink — temperatures drop sharply with altitude and the rest helps pace the final stairs. Carry small cash; prices rise the higher you go.
~4 min tuktuk · 2.4 km from stop 7
8Sri Pada Summit Temple & Footprint· 1.5 hours
At the top sits the small temple sheltering the sacred "footprint" rock, where pilgrims queue to pay respects and ring the summit bell. Arrive by 5:30 a.m. to claim a spot for sunrise; it gets crowded and cold, so wear all your layers. Watch east for the sunrise and, minutes later, the peak's triangular shadow on the clouds.
~9 min drive · 5.5 km from stop 8
9Descent to Nallathanniya· 2.5-3 hours down
Head down in daylight to enjoy the valley, waterfalls and tea slopes the darkness hid on the way up. The downhill is hard on the knees, so take it slowly and use the handrails. Back at the guesthouse, eat, shower and rest your legs for the afternoon.
Note: This is the demanding day — keep the afternoon and evening free for recovery.
Day 3 — Maskeliya temples, lakes & colonial churches
- 10
Maskeliya Town & Buddhist Temple· 1 hour
A small estate town with a hillside Buddhist temple and views over the Maussakele reservoir. It's a relaxed cultural stop and a good place for a local breakfast of string hoppers or roti. Markets here are lively in the morning.
~19 min drive · 11.3 km from stop 10
11Laxapana Falls· 1 hour
One of Sri Lanka's tallest falls at around 126 m, feeding the country's first major hydro plant. A short walk leads to the viewpoint; flow is strongest just after rain and the surrounding forest is good for birdlife. Wear grippy shoes as the path can be slick.
~15 min drive · 8.7 km from stop 11
12Castlereagh Lake (Reservoir)· 1 hour
A photogenic reservoir ringed by tea estates and luxury bungalows, ideal for a slow lakeside drive and reflections of the hills. Several estate roads offer quiet pull-ins for photos. Time it for late morning when mist usually clears.
~10 min drive · 5.9 km from stop 12
13Christ Church Warleigh, Dickoya· 45 minutes
A small stone Anglican church from the British planter era, set right on the edge of Castlereagh Lake. The interior has memorial plaques to tea pioneers and the lakeside setting is quietly atmospheric. It's usually open during daytime; a caretaker may unlock it on request.
~5 min tuktuk · 3.1 km from stop 13
14Return to Hatton Station· 1 hour
Wind back to Hatton for an onward train or car transfer to Kandy, Nuwara Eliya or Ella. If you have time, take the train — the section toward Nanu Oya is among the island's most scenic. Confirm departure times in advance, as services are limited.
Note: Light day to rest tired legs while still seeing the region's highlights.

Local tips
- →Climb only in season (roughly December–May); outside it the steps are unlit, slippery and risky, and the summit temple is closed.
- →Start the ascent by 2–2:30 a.m. from Nallathanniya to reach the top before sunrise with margin for crowds on the steps.
- →Dress in warm layers — the summit is windy and near-freezing before dawn even when the base is mild.
- →Avoid Poya (full-moon) days and weekends if you dislike crowds; the steps can become a slow-moving queue with thousands of pilgrims.
- →Bring small denominations of cash for trailside tea stalls and temple donations, plus a headlamp so your hands stay free on the railings.
