At a glance

Bentota sits about 65 km south of Colombo where the Bentota River meets the Indian Ocean, making it one of Sri Lanka's easiest coastal escapes to reach by road or rail. The town pairs a long golden beach and a calm river-mouth lagoon with two of the country's most important design landmarks — Geoffrey Bawa's estate at Lunuganga and his brother Bevis Bawa's Brief Garden — so culture and nature sit within minutes of each other. The pace here is unhurried. Mornings suit river safaris and turtle hatcheries when wildlife is active and light is soft for photography; afternoons are for temple visits and garden walks; evenings belong to the beach and the sandbar where the river meets the sea. Mid-range travellers will find plenty of boutique guesthouses, beachfront cafés serving fresh seafood and rice-and-curry, and short tuk-tuk hops between sights. Three days is enough to cover the headline experiences without rushing — beach and boat on day one, the Bawa gardens and a hilltop temple on day two, and turtles plus a mangrove river safari on day three. It also leaves room for slow meals and a sunset or two, which is the whole point of Bentota.

Highlights

  • Boat safari up the Bentota River and lagoon to spot monitor lizards, kingfishers and mangrove channels
  • Lunuganga — Geoffrey Bawa's country estate, the testing ground for tropical-modernist Sri Lankan design
  • Brief Garden, Bevis Bawa's eccentric hillside garden of sculpture, terraces and shaded courtyards
  • Kande Viharaya temple in Aluthgama with one of Sri Lanka's tallest seated Buddha statues
  • Kosgoda sea-turtle conservation project, home to rescued and hatchery-raised turtles
  • The Bentota sandbar where the river and ocean meet — calm swimming on one side, surf on the other
  • Fresh seafood and authentic rice-and-curry along the Bentota–Aluthgama beach strip

Day 1 — beach, river safari & a riverside temple

  1. 1

    Bentota Beach· 1.5 hours

Start early on the wide main beach before the heat builds; the southern end near the river mouth has the calmest water for swimming. Watersports operators (jet-ski, banana boat) cluster here from around 9am if you want more than a swim.

  2. ~10 min walk · 0.8 km from stop 1

    2

Bentota River Boat Safari· 2 hours

Jetties near the Bentota road bridge run 1.5–2 hour boat trips through the river and mangrove channels; go mid-morning for active wildlife. Expect monitor lizards, water birds and kingfishers — bring a zoom lens and negotiate the price before boarding.

  3. ~6 min tuktuk · 3.5 km from stop 2

    3

Galapata Raja Maha Vihara· 45 minutes

This quiet ancient temple on the river's south bank dates to the Polonnaruwa era and sees few tourists, so dress modestly and remove shoes. Look for the old stone inscriptions and the painted image house — a good cultural stop with no entry crowds.

  4. ~6 min tuktuk · 3.7 km from stop 3

    4

Bentota Sandbar (river mouth)· 1 hour

End the day at the spit where the Bentota River meets the ocean; the lagoon side is shallow and calm while the sea side gets the surf and the sunset. It's the best free sunset-photography spot in town.

Note: Carry small cash for the boat safari and temple donations — card payment isn't available at either.

Day 2 — Bawa gardens & hilltop temple

  1. 5

    Lunuganga Estate· 1.5 hours

Geoffrey Bawa's former country home is now a heritage garden open for guided walks (roughly 9.30am–4pm; booking ahead is wise). The hour-long tour explains how the rolling lawns, follies and lake views shaped modern Sri Lankan architecture — essential for design and photography lovers.

  2. ~10 min drive · 5.6 km from stop 5

    6

    Brief Garden· 1.5 hours

Bevis Bawa's hillside garden, about 20 minutes inland, layers terraces, ponds and quirky sculpture into dense greenery (open daily, mornings best for light). A resident guide walks you through the house and art collection; wear closed shoes for the slightly overgrown paths.

  3. ~8 min tuktuk · 4.6 km from stop 6

    7

    Kande Viharaya· 1 hour

This working temple above Aluthgama is crowned by one of the island's largest seated Buddha statues, visible from the road. Climb the steps for valley views, then visit the older image house and bo-tree shrine; modest dress and bare feet required inside.

  4. ~6 min tuktuk · 3.6 km from stop 7

    8

    Aluthgama Town & Market· 1 hour

Wind down in Aluthgama's small bustling centre, where the fish market and street stalls are good for photos and cheap eats. It's the spot to try a local rice-and-curry lunch or pick up fruit before heading back to the coast.

Note: Pre-book the Lunuganga tour slot, as walk-ins are sometimes turned away when groups are scheduled.

Day 3 — sea turtles, mangroves & a quiet beach

  1. 9

Kosgoda Sea Turtle Conservation Project· 1 hour

A short drive south, this hatchery rescues eggs and injured turtles; morning visits often coincide with hatchling releases (typically open from 8am). Choose a project that releases hatchlings rather than keeping adults long-term, and skip handling the animals.

  2. ~14 min drive · 8.4 km from stop 9

    10

Madu River Safari (Balapitiya)· 2 hours

Boats from Balapitiya explore the Madu Ganga's mangrove islands, fish-spas and a small island temple over about two hours. Go for a longer route to reach the quieter mangrove tunnels — it's the most rewarding wildlife photography of the trip.

  3. ~25 min drive · 14.8 km from stop 10

    11

    Induruwa Beach· 2 hours

Finish at this calmer, less developed beach just north of Kosgoda for a swim and a relaxed seafood lunch. Fewer crowds than Bentota make it the place for a slow final afternoon before you head onward.

Note: Combine the turtle project and Madu River trip in one morning since both sit along the coast road south of Bentota.

Local tips

  • Tuk-tuks are the easiest way between sights — agree the fare first or use the PickMe app for metered pricing.
  • Always negotiate boat-safari prices per boat (not per person) before stepping aboard, and confirm the route length in advance.
  • Temples like Galapata and Kande Viharaya require covered shoulders and knees and bare feet — carry a sarong or scarf.
  • The coastal train from Colombo to Aluthgama is scenic and cheap; sit on the right-hand (sea) side heading south.
  • Choose turtle projects that release hatchlings quickly and avoid those charging extra to hold adult turtles in tanks.
