At a glance

Kandy is the cultural heart of Sri Lanka — the last royal capital, home of the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, and a 500m-altitude lake-side town where the climate softens from coastal heat to a permanent spring. Three days here covers the temple, the gardens, a tea-country morning, and a Pinnawala or Sigiriya day trip.

Highlights

  • Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic — Sri Lanka's holiest Buddhist site
  • Kandy Lake — Man-made lake built in 1807 by the last Kandyan king
  • Royal Botanical Gardens (Peradeniya) — 60-hectare gardens — orchid house, the giant Javan fig tree, avenue of royal palms
  • Bahirawakanda Buddha — 88-foot white Buddha overlooking the city
  • Embekka Devalaya — 16th-century wooden temple famous for some of the finest wood carvings in South Asia
