Which foreign medical universities are recognised by the Sri Lanka Medical Council?

As verified on 2026-09-25, the SLMC's published list holds 25 foreign medical programmes across 10 countries — Belarus, China, Cyprus, Georgia, the Kingdom of Bahrain, Malaysia, Nepal, Pakistan, the Republic of Armenia and Russia — plus 12 dental programmes in India and Malaysia. Recognition attaches to a named programme at a named institution, not to a country.

Is an MBBS from Bangladesh or India recognised in Sri Lanka?

No Bangladeshi or Indian medical programme appears on the SLMC's currently published recognised list. India does appear on the dental list, for BDS programmes. An absence is not a refusal: recognition is granted programme by programme when an institution applies, so a school that has never applied simply is not listed. Ask the SLMC in writing about a specific school before paying a fee.

How long does SLMC recognition of a foreign medical school last?

Recognition of a degree programme is granted for 5 calendar years from the date it is granted. Every one of the 37 windows on the current list is exactly five years long — the published end date is the start date plus five years, less a day. After that the institution has to apply again.

What happens if my university's SLMC recognition expires while I am still studying?

The published window simply ends on that date, and nothing later is published until the institution applies again and the SLMC grants a renewal. Renewals are routine but not automatic. If your expected graduation falls after the window closes, write to the SLMC early rather than in final year, and keep the reply.

Can I sit the ERPM if my university is not on the SLMC list?

The Examination for Registration to Practise Medicine is open to graduates of institutions the SLMC recognises. If your school is not on the published list, the eligibility question has to be settled with the SLMC directly — this tool reports what is published and cannot decide an individual case. Sitting dates and fees are announced per exam by the SLMC.

What is the Act 16 exam, and is it the same as the ERPM?

Same exam. The ERPM takes its statutory basis from the Medical Ordinance (Cap. 105) section 29(1)(b)(ii)(cc), as amended by Act No. 16 of 1965, which is why Sri Lankan doctors and students still call it the Act 16 exam. Passing it leads to provisional registration, then a 12-month internship, then full registration.

Why does the SLMC list show odd dates like 31 September 2027?

Because the status field on the SLMC record is free text, and it carries typing errors. One row — Kulliyyah of Medicine, IIUM — reads 31/09/2027, and September has 30 days. This tool shows 30 September 2027, which is exactly where the five-year term from 1 October 2022 lands, and prints the original string underneath the result so you can see what was published.

Does being on the SLMC list mean the degree is a good one?

No. Recognition is a registration question, not a quality ranking. It says the SLMC will accept a graduate of that named programme into the ERPM pathway during the published window. This page deliberately carries no rankings, scores or recommendations — an education agent's brochure is not evidence, and neither is a listing here.

How often does this list change, and when was it last checked?

The SLMC amends the list a handful of times a year. The dataset here was pulled and transcribed from the SLMC's own published endpoints on 2026-09-25, and is due a re-check by 2026-11-15 — just after the earliest window on the list closes. The day counts on the page are computed against today's date every time the page loads.

Is my degree recognised if I studied at a branch campus or through a twinning programme?

Not necessarily. Recognition names a programme at an address. The SLMC attaches an explicit condition to the IMU dentistry row: only the full programme conducted by IMU is recognised, and no twinning programme is accepted. Check the campus address on the result card against the one on your offer letter.

This tool reports what the SLMC has published. It is not a decision on any individual degree, and it does not rank or recommend schools.

How it works

The Sri Lanka Medical Council publishes one list of foreign medical and dental degree programmes it recognises. Only a graduate of a recognised institution may register to practise medicine in Sri Lanka, so that list is the first thing to check before paying an education agent anything. The SLMC's own table gives an institution, a country, an address, a degree and a status string. This page does the arithmetic that the table leaves to the reader.

Normalising the status string.The status field is free text and it is inconsistent. “Recognised form”, “Recognized from”, “Recognised form from” and “Recgnised from” all appear, with stray internal spaces such as 01/ 08/2026. Medical rows are written day-first; dental rows are written year-first. Nothing here is parsed at load time — each of the 37rows was resolved by hand into a start date and an end date, and each keeps the SLMC's verbatim string so you can open a result and read exactly what was published.

The transcription check. A separate SLMC page states that recognition of a degree programme runs for 5 calendar years. That gives an independent way to test whether each date order was read correctly: the published end date should equal the start date plus five years, less a day. All 37 rows pass that check, and the check is re-run on every page load rather than trusted once — open “What the SLMC actually published” on any result to see it. One row needed the check: Kulliyyah of Medicine, IIUM is published as ending 31 September 2027, a date that does not exist. The five-year term from 1 October 2022 lands on 30 September 2027, so that is the date shown, with the original string printed underneath.

Classifying a programme today. With a window and a date, the rule is plain arithmetic. Before the start date, the window is not yet in force. After the end date it has lapsed. Inside it, a window with 180 days or fewer remaining is flagged as expiring soon; anything longer reads as recognised. Day counts are measured between UTC midnights at both ends, so a timezone offset can never move a count by a day, and the final day of a window still counts as a recognised day.

The graduation check.Enter the year you expect to finish and each result compares the end of the window against 31 December of that year — the conservative end, because someone graduating “in 2032” may graduate in any month of it. When the window falls short, the result says by how much, in whole years and months, and says that recognition must be renewed. It never says it will be renewed: a renewal is applied for by the institution and granted by the SLMC, and neither is this tool's to predict.

What a blank result means.If a school is not found, the page says it is not on the published list — and stops there. Recognition is granted programme by programme, on application, so an absence means “not listed”, never “refused” and never “worthless”. The panel points at the SLMC and suggests asking about the specific school in writing.

From a recognised degree to practising in Sri Lanka

Recognition is the first gate, not the only one. A graduate of a recognised foreign programme still has to pass the ERPM and complete an internship before full registration. Sitting dates, fees and application formats change per exam and are deliberately not encoded here — check the SLMC announcements for the current ones.

1Graduate from a recognised programmeThe institution must appear on the SLMC's recognised list, and the recognition must be in force for the degree to count.
2Pass the ERPM (the Act 16 exam)The Examination for Registration to Practise Medicine, held under the Medical Ordinance (Cap. 105) s.29(1)(b)(ii)(cc) as amended by Act No. 16 of 1965.
3Provisional registrationGranted by the SLMC once the ERPM is passed, and required before internship.
4Internship — 12 monthsServed at a hospital approved by the SLMC for internship training.
5Full registrationGranted on satisfactory completion of internship. Only then may you practise independently.
