Structure verified against KOKO and Mintpay: 3 interest-free installments, first at checkout. Late fees and card APR are user-entered scenarios, not published figures. This is a pre-purchase planner, not an eligibility or credit-line check.

How it works

Both KOKO and Mintpay run the same consumer product in Sri Lanka: a single purchase is split into three equal, interest-free installments. The first is charged at checkout and the other two fall on your following two monthly cycles. This calculator reproduces that schedule to the rupee and layers on the affordability maths you don't see at checkout.

  1. Installment split. The price P is divided by three. Installments 1 and 2 are round(P ÷ 3) and the third is P − (part 1 + part 2), so the three parts always add back to exactly P. Total interest is zero by definition of the interest-free product.
  2. Due dates. Installment 1 is your purchase date. Installment 2 is one calendar month later and installment 3 two months later, on the same day of the month — clamped for short months (a 31st becomes the 28th/30th where needed).
  3. Share of income. If you enter your monthly net income, each installment is shown as installment ÷ income, so you can judge whether one-third of the price fits a single month's budget.
  4. Total monthly BNPL outflow. Your installment plus any other active BNPL payment you enter gives your real combined monthly commitment — the figure that matters when you stack several small plans across different retailers.
  5. Missed-payment scenario. A single missed installment costs the price plus one late fee. Because late fees vary by provider, order and promotion and are not published as one fixed schedule, the fee is a value you enter rather than a number the tool invents.
  6. Card comparison.To show why "3 payments, no interest" differs from a card EMI, the tool estimates card interest as P × (APR ÷ 100) × (2 ÷ 12) over the roughly two-month horizon. This is an editable illustration, not any specific bank's rate; the point is that BNPL adds no such charge.

As a built-in cross-check, the three installments are always reconciled back to the exact purchase amount — if they ever failed to sum to the price, the tool would flag it. On-time repayment always totals the sticker price with Rs 0 interest.

Worked examples

Rs 30,000 headphones on KOKO

Salary Rs 90,000/month

  1. Split: 30,000 ÷ 3 = 10,000 exactly
  2. Installments: Rs 10,000 / Rs 10,000 / Rs 10,000 (sum Rs 30,000)
  3. Due: today, +1 month, +2 months
  4. Share of income: 10,000 ÷ 90,000 = 11.1% per installment
  5. On-time total: Rs 30,000 — interest Rs 0

Rs 25,000 with rounding

  1. Split: 25,000 ÷ 3 = 8,333.33
  2. Parts 1 & 2: round(8,333.33) = Rs 8,333 each
  3. Part 3: 25,000 − 16,666 = Rs 8,334 (absorbs the remainder)
  4. Sum: 8,333 + 8,333 + 8,334 = Rs 25,000 ✓

  1. Split: 45,000 ÷ 3 = Rs 15,000 × 3 (sum Rs 45,000)
  2. Missed-payment total: 45,000 + 500 = Rs 45,500

  4. Card illustration: 45,000 × 0.24 × (2 ÷ 12) = Rs 1,800 interest
  5. So a card EMI would cost about Rs 1,800 more than on-time BNPL
