Sri Lanka Highway Bus Timetable (NTC expressway times)

There is no modelled number in this tool. Aggregator pages answer “highway bus time table” with “buses run every 20 minutes” — an approximation nobody can plan a 9 a.m. meeting around. NTC publishes the actual sheet for every expressway route under the National Transport Commission Act No. 37 of 1991, and this page is that sheet, read row by row.

Where the times come from

Each of the 13sheets was downloaded from the Drive folder NTC's timetable page links, on 2026-09-23. Eleven of them are text PDFs; their words were read with their x-coordinates and grouped into columns by position, rather than from a flowed text dump — the Sinhala headers are in a legacy encoding and long rows drift between columns when the text is flattened. The remaining two are scans with no usable text layer, or headers that only resolve visually; both were rendered at 200 dpi and read off the image twice.

What the tool computes

Times are stored as minutes from midnight — 4:15 becomes 255 — exactly as the sheet prints them. Four things are then derived, and only these four:

1. Next departures. The turns whose departure is at or after the time you enter, in departure order. A bus leaving at the exact minute you asked about is included — you can still catch it, and excluding it would answer a 04:15 query with the 04:40 bus.
2. Journey length = arrival − departure, with no rounding. Where a sheet prints an arrival smaller than its departure the bus has crossed midnight, so a day is added and the time is shown with a +1 day marker.
3. First and last bus of that column, in that direction, on that day. This is the single most-searched fact on the whole corridor.
4. Typical gap = the median of the differences between consecutive departures. It is shown beside the real first and last times, never instead of them, and it is withheld entirely on a sheet too thin to average.

How the transcription is checked

Every sheet prints its own journey time in the footer. The tool recomputes that figure from the transcribed rows — the median of every end-to-end departure–arrival pair — and compares. 9 of the 12sheets that print a figure agree to the minute, which is a strong signal that no column slipped during transcription. The three that disagree are named on the calculator itself rather than quietly reconciled: Galle–Kadawatha's footer says 1 h 40 while all 65 printed pairs are 1 h 30, Elpitiya–Colombo's says 1 h 55 while its pairs are mostly 2 h, and Matara–Moratuwa's 2 h is the Matara–Piliyandala leg rather than the run to the university.

A second check runs over the whole dataset on every page load: arrival after departure on every turn, departures in the order the sheet prints them, one time per stop column, and a journey length inside a 45–300 minute band. It currently reports no problems across 2,109 transcribed departures.

What this page does not claim

NTC issues most of these as temporarycyclic timetables, and a sheet is what an operator is licensed to run, not proof that a particular bus ran this morning. There is no live tracking here, because NTC's GPS feed is not a published dataset. If a scheduled bus does not turn up, the passenger hotline is 1955.

Each route's own sheet, its NTC route number, its effective date and NTC's own “temporary” or “special days” wording are printed under the calculator, with a direct link to that route's PDF. The set was last re-downloaded and re-transcribed on 2026-09-23; it is re-checked every six months and whenever NTC reissues a sheet.
