Sources cited: route list, stop register and the 2,575-row fare table published by Lanka Metro Transit at lankametro.lk, re-read and compared row by row on the date shown under the heading. The network minimum is Rs 65. Nothing on this page is estimated from distance, and no concession fare is shown because the operator's own table does not publish one.

How it works

There is no fare formula to apply here, and that is the point of this page. Lanka Metro Transit (Pvt) Ltd publishes a fixed rupee amount for every ordered pair of stops on every direction of every route, so the correct answer is a lookup in its table rather than an arithmetic model. The calculator above holds all 2,575 of those published fares and reads the one you asked for.

  1. Your route code resolves to the operator's own route record, which carries its two published directions and its line colour.
  2. Your direction resolves to one of those two. Fares are published one way along the stop sequence, so a trip back is looked up on the opposite direction, not by reversing the numbers.
  3. Each stop resolves to its position in that direction, counting from 1 at the first stop. The lookup needs the boarding position to come before the alighting one.
  4. The pair is read out of the published matrix for that direction. Total equals fare times passengers, with no rounding, because every published value is already a whole rupee.

Why there is no distance model. We tested one. Across the published table, journeys priced at the Rs 65 minimum run up to 4.8 km in a straight line, while journeys priced three steps higher start at 3.3 km. The distance bands overlap heavily and no single rate per kilometre reproduces the table. Stop count does not predict it either. Any tool that multiplies kilometres by a rate is guessing, and a guess is not what you want before a job interview.

What we verify instead. A correctly published stage fare table has three properties, and all three were checked across every one of the 2,575 rows: every amount sits on the operator's 18-step fare ladder (0 exceptions), riding one stop further never costs less (0 exceptions), and no journey is cheaper bought as two tickets than ridden through (0 exceptions). A fourth property, that boarding one stop later never costs more, holds on 2,559 rows and breaks on 16, which are listed further down rather than smoothed away.

On the half fare. The source carries a half-fare column, and it is equal to the full fare on 2,574 of the 2,575 rows. So this page shows one fare per passenger and does not advertise a child, student or senior concession the operator's own data does not show. If the operator publishes one, this page will carry it.

What is out of scope. No timetable, because the operator publishes none: it states a 5 to 10 minutes peak headway and shows live positions in its own app. No live tracking, no multi-route journey planning (there is no published transfer fare), and no Kandy, Galle or Jaffna routes until the operator publishes them. The 220 stop records here cover 116 distinct stop names across the seven Colombo routes.

Worked examples

CM01, Makumbura to Pettah, end to end

Rs 300

  1. Route CM01, direction Makumbura to Pettah, 21 stops.
  2. Makumbura is stop 1. Pettah is stop 21.
  3. Published fare for the pair (1, 21): Rs 300.
  4. Two passengers: Rs 300 x 2 = Rs 600.
  5. Same route, shorter leg: Makumbura to Battaramulla, pair (1, 8), is Rs 210.

CM03, Kadawatha to Makumbura, the dearest fare on the network

Rs 375

  1. Route CM03, direction Kadawatha to Makumbura, 22 stops.
  2. Kadawatha is stop 1. Makumbura is stop 22.
  3. Published fare for the pair (1, 22): Rs 375, step 18 of 18 on the ladder.
  4. Kadawatha to Borella 02 (YMBA), pair (1, 9), is Rs 225.
  5. Kadawatha to Nugegoda, pair (1, 13), is Rs 270.

Edge case: the stop where boarding later costs more

+Rs 25

  1. Route CM03, direction Makumbura to Kadawatha.
  2. Maharagama is stop 4. Maharagama Apeksha Hospital 1 is stop 5.
  3. Maharagama to Wijerama Junction, pair (4, 7): Rs 85.
  4. Apeksha Hospital to the same stop, pair (5, 7): Rs 110.
  5. One stop closer, Rs 25 more. The quirk is in the published table, so the calculator prints it and flags the cheaper boarding point.

Journeys that cost less on another route

64 stop pairs are served by more than one route, and 16 of them are priced differently depending on which bus you board. These are the biggest gaps in the published table.

Where boarding one stop later costs more

16 published rows break the rule that a shorter ride should not cost more. 15 of them sit at a single stop, Maharagama Apeksha Hospital 1 on CM03 towards Kadawatha. We print the operator's figure and name the gap, because the fare charged on the bus is the published one.
