Times are computed from astronomical formulas (PrayTimes.org angle conventions; NOAA solar algorithm) for the selected city, using the ACJU-recognised 18° Fajr/Isha default. Local mosque timetables may round differently by a minute or two. Ramadan start and Eid depend on the ACJU moon-sighting announcement, which this tool does not predict.

How it works

Every time on this page is derived from the position of the sun for the chosen date and the city's latitude (φ), longitude (L) and timezone (Sri Lanka Standard Time, UTC+5:30). The astronomy follows the published PrayTimes.org formulation, with the solar declination (δ) and equation of time (EoT) from the standard low-precision solar model; an independent NOAA/Spencer series is run alongside it as a cross-check.

  1. Dhuhr (solar noon). The anchor for every other time: local clock noon corrected by the equation of time and the city's longitude — Dhuhr = (12 − EoT) + (TZ − L/15).
  2. Sunrise & Sunset (Iftar/Maghrib).Solve the hour angle H for a sun altitude of −0.833° (atmospheric refraction plus the sun's semi-diameter): cos H = (sin(−0.833°) − sinφ·sinδ) / (cosφ·cosδ). Sunrise = Dhuhr − H/15; Maghrib = Dhuhr + H/15.
  3. Fajr & Isha. The same hour-angle equation with the method's depression angle in place of 0.833°. The ACJU/Karachi default uses 18° for both. Umm al-Qura instead sets Isha to a fixed 90 minutes after Maghrib.
  4. Asr.The afternoon prayer begins when an object's shadow reaches a set multiple of its height. The target altitude α satisfies cot α = t + tan|φ − δ|, with t = 1 for Standard (Shafi'i) or t = 2 for Hanafi. Asr = Dhuhr + H/15.
  5. Sehri (Imsak). Sehri = Fajr − your chosen margin (default 10 minutes). Iftar is simply Maghrib.

Each fractional hour is converted to HH:MM and rounded to the nearest minute. Because Sri Lanka lies close to the equator, the sun always crosses every one of these altitudes each day, so the "no true night" problem that complicates high-latitude calculators never occurs here. The tool reports the agreement between the two independent solar models (typically well under 0.1°) so you can see the computation is internally corroborated.

Worked examples

Colombo — 9 June 2026 (ACJU/Karachi 18°, Standard Asr)

φ 6.9271°N, L 79.8612°E · δ ≈ +22.93°, EoT ≈ +0.7 min

  1. Dhuhr = (12 − 0.012) + (5.5 − 79.8612/15) = 12.16 h → 12:10 PM
  2. Sunset H(0.833°) = 93.86° → 6.257 h; Maghrib (Iftar) = 12.16 + 6.257 → 6:25 PM
  3. Sunrise = 12.16 − 6.257 → 5:54 AM
  4. Fajr H(18°) = 112.92° → 7.528 h; Fajr = 12.16 − 7.528 → 4:38 AM
  5. Isha = 12.16 + 7.528 → 7:42 PM
  6. Asr cot α = 1 + tan|6.93−22.93| → α = 37.86°; Asr → 3:37 PM
  7. Sehri = Fajr − 10 min → 4:28 AM

Jaffna — 9 June 2026 (same method)

φ 9.6615°N, L 80.0255°E — a higher latitude than Colombo

  1. Same date, but 2.7° further north and slightly east.
  2. Fajr → 4:32 AM (earlier than Colombo's 4:38)
  3. Sunrise → 5:49 AM, Dhuhr → 12:09 PM
  4. Maghrib (Iftar) → 6:29 PM (later than Colombo's 6:25)
  5. Isha → 7:47 PM; Sehri → 4:22 AM
  6. The wider daylight gap is the latitude effect — handy for comparing northern cities.

Colombo — 23 September 2026 (equinox edge case)

δ ≈ 0°, so sunrise and sunset are symmetric about solar noon

  1. At the equinox the sun's declination is near zero.
  2. Sunrise → 6:00 AM, Maghrib → 6:06 PM
  3. Dhuhr → 12:03 PM — the exact midpoint of sunrise and sunset
  4. Sunrise (360) + Sunset (1086) = 1446 = 2 × Dhuhr (723) ✓
  5. This symmetry is a built-in check that the equation of time is applied correctly.
