Sri Lanka Railway Retiring Room & Circuit Bungalow Rates
What a night in Sri Lankan government railway accommodation costs. Pick a station retiring room or one of the two railway holiday bungalows, set the nights, and get the total, the sleeping capacity, the 12.00 noon to 10.00 a.m. occupancy window and where to apply. Every rate is published, not estimated.
How it works
There is no modelling in this tool. Both halves of it price a published tariff by multiplication, and the only judgement anywhere is how to read one ambiguous column heading, which is spelled out below rather than hidden.
Retiring rooms
Sri Lanka Railways publishes a single notice, “List of retiring rooms operated through Railway Stations”, covering 10 stations and 34 room rows. Each row carries a room type, a number, and a charge. The total is:
total = published charge × rooms × nights
The middle column is the part that needs care. The Nanuoya table heads it in full, “Number of people that can be accommodated”, but every other table heads it “Number, available for accommodation”, which could mean rooms or people. It means people, and two printed details settle it. The Badulla table is captioned “Total number of rooms - 08” while its four rows read 02, 03, 04 and 05, which sum to 14 and so cannot be counts of rooms. And Jaffna's “Single rooms, 01” is plainly a capacity. So the column is modelled as per-room sleeping capacity, and the per-bed figure beside each charge is the charge divided by it.
Holiday bungalows
The two railway holiday bungalows, at Nuwara Eliya and Kataragama, are reserved by the Ministry of Transport rather than by the railway. Clause 5.3 of the Sri Lanka Railways holiday-resort service document publishes exactly two daily rates and no others: Rs 2,000 a day for railway and Transport Ministry employees, Rs 6,000 a day for other citizens. The charge is for the whole bungalow, so the concession is worth 66.67% of the citizen rate whatever the party size. The application form itself prints no rate at all, the daily rent is written in by the approving officer, which is why clause 5.3 is the only figure this page will quote.
Counting the days
Rule 05 of section “ආ” of the Ministry's application form defines a day of occupancy as 12.00 noon on the arrival day to 10.00 a.m. the next day. Check-out is therefore the arrival date plus the number of nights, at 10.00 a.m., a two-night stay arriving on the 14th ends at 10 a.m. on the 16th and is charged as two days. That same rule is what makes the retiring-room charge a per-night figure rather than a per-stay one.
Checks and refusals
Nights are accepted as a whole number from 1 to 30; anything else, including a fraction or an empty field, is refused with a message rather than silently treated as zero. A bungalow party above 8people is refused outright, quoting rule 02 of the form. A retiring-room party larger than the beds selected is still priced, but told how many rooms of the largest selected type it would actually need. Finally, every total is cross-checked by adding each night's charge one night at a time; the calculator only shows its verified badge when the two methods agree to the rupee.
Worked examples
The guest rules you are agreeing to
Transcribed from section “ආ” of the Ministry of Transport circuit bungalow application form. They apply to the bungalows; a retiring room is a station booking and carries no equivalent printed list.
- Sign the arrival register with the date, time and your name. Anyone not named on the approved application is not given accommodation.
- A maximum of 08 persons may be accommodated in a bungalow.
- Check the furniture, fittings, electrical items, crockery, cutlery and kitchen items against the inventory register on arrival, and report any shortage to the bungalow keeper at once.
- Loss of or damage to any item is recovered from the person who took the accommodation.
- A day of occupancy runs from 12.00 noon on the arrival day to 10.00 a.m. the next day.
- Unlawful or disorderly conduct cancels the reservation, and everyone must leave at once.
- A reservation may be cancelled at 24 hours' notice if the Minister or Deputy Minister requires the bungalow.
- Money is paid to the Ministry's shroff.
- If you cancel after paying, the money is not refunded, and no money is refunded for fewer days than were approved. Money is refunded only when a paid reservation is cancelled on the Minister's priority.
Bungalows this page deliberately prices at nothing
“Circuit bungalow” covers far more than the railway's two. For these operators no tariff is published anywhere readable, so no figure appears here, a made-up rate would be worse than no rate.
Department of Wildlife Conservation bungalows and campsites
dwc.gov.lk answers but publishes no fee schedule at all (re-checked 2026-10-03).
Book through the DWC head office in Battaramulla or the park office.
Forest Department bungalows
forestdept.gov.lk did not respond at all (re-checked 2026-10-03).
Book through the Forest Department head office in Battaramulla.
Circuit bungalows of other ministries and departments
Each institution sets its own rent, and the approving officer writes it onto the application form. Nothing central is published.
Apply to the ministry or department that owns the bungalow.
Planning around a park instead? The national park entry fee calculator prices the gate charges that are published, and the train fare calculator plus the train timetable cover getting there.

Every figure on this page was read off those documents on 2026-10-03. The English retiring-room scan misprints one Nanuoya cell as “2,30,00”; the Sinhala edition of the same table prints Rs 2,300.00, and that is the figure used. Neither notice carries a printed issue date, so the publisher timestamps above are upper bounds on their age rather than issue dates.
