Rail distance from Colombo Fort
0km

0 by definition, Colombo Fort is the datum the table measures from.

Both figures above are the only two values on this page that are not in the Station Details table, whose Fort row is blank in both columns. The distance is 0 by definition, every other distance in that table is measured fromFort. The number is what Sri Lanka Railways publishes as "Fort Railway Station Inquiries" on its Head Office Details page.

Station 1 of 69 on this line, ordered by the published distance from Fort. Sri Lanka Railways does not publish the track sequence as data, so this is an ordering by distance, on a line with a branch it need not be the next station a train calls at.

What this data is, and is not

  • 306 rows as Sri Lanka Railways prints them, merged to 303 stations: 3 rows repeat a station already listed on the same line, with the distance cell left blank the second time.
  • 136 stations publish no telephone number. Those show the 1971railway information line instead, never a nearby station's number.
  • 39 stations publish no distance from Fort, most of the Batticaloa and Talaimannar tables. Those stations carry no neighbours rather than a guessed position.
  • Two numbers are malformed at source and are not repaired on our own authority: Seeduwa is printed without its leading zero, and Katugastota with nine digits instead of ten. Both carry a note on their card.
  • SLR's page stamps itself "Last Updated January 2, 2025". We last read it on October 2, 2026. Those are two different facts and the page keeps them apart.

Every station name, distance and telephone number here is transcribed from the Sri Lanka Railways "Station Details" table. The 264distances were checked a second time against SLR's own published fare tables, which agree to within 13 metres on every one of the 55 stations both sources carry. A number gone dead? [email protected].

How it works

There is no arithmetic model in this tool, its correctness is transcription discipline plus one ordering rule, so both are written out here.

The transcription

Every row comes from the Sri Lanka Railways Station Details table, read on 2026-10-02: nine tables, 306 rows, each giving a station name, a "Distance in KM - from Fort" and a "Telephone No.". A blank cell stays blank, stored as nothing at all, never zero, and the page says "not published by Sri Lanka Railways" for it, because a zero reads as a distance and a blank reads as a bug in this page. 3 rows repeat a station already listed on the same line, with the distance cell left blank the second time; those are merged on name and line, keeping the fuller row, which leaves 303 stations. Every merge is listed below.

Names and numbers

The official table carries plain typographical errors: Polgahawela is printed "Poplgahawela", Mirigama "Mihirigama", Ella "Elle". The policy is to display the conventional spelling, keep SLR's on the card, and search both, so pasting the government page's spelling still finds the station. 15stations are shown under a different spelling; anything that would need a letter inserted on our own authority keeps SLR's spelling and gets a search alias instead. Numbers are stored as published and dialled in international form. Two cells are malformed at source and neither is quietly patched, Seeduwa's is missing its trunk zero, and Katugastota's has nine digits where a Sri Lankan fixed line has ten.

Position on the line

Previous and next station are derived: take the stations of that line that carry a published distance, sort them ascending, and read off the entries either side; the gap is the difference. That arithmetic runs in whole metres, because the Kandy-to-Mahaiyawa gap of 1.665 km has no exact binary form and rounds down to 1.66 in floating point, where the table says 1.67. It is an ordering by distance, not the official track sequence, which Sri Lanka Railways does not publish as data, on a line with a branch the next station by distance need not be the next one a train calls at. A station with no published distance is left out of the ordering and shows no neighbours.

Colombo Fort, the one derived row

Fort appears in the Coast Line table with both cells blank. Two values are filled in, both labelled on the card. The distance is 0 by definition: every other distance in that table is measured from Fort. The number is 011-2434215, from SLR's Head Office Details page, where it is published as "Fort Railway Station Inquiries". Nothing else here is filled from a second source.

Worked examples

Name, line, distance, number, neighbours

Kandy, the ordinary path

  1. SLR Matale Line row: Kandy | 120.737 | 081-2222271
  2. Line: Matale Line (branches off the Main Line at Peradeniya)
  3. Distance: 120.737 km → displayed 120.74 km from Colombo Fort
  4. Telephone: 081-2222271, dialled as +94812222271
  5. Matale line ordered by distance:
  6. … Sarasaviuyana 115.686 · KANDY 120.737 · Mahaiyawa 122.402 …
  7. Previous: Sarasaviuyana, 120.737 − 115.686 = 5.051 → 5.05 km
  8. Next: Mahaiyawa, 122.402 − 120.737 = 1.665 → 1.67 km
  9. Position: 2 of 10 stations on the line

What a duplicate and a missing next station look like

Vavuniya, the merged row, and the end of the data

  1. SLR Northern Line, row 29: Vavuniya | 254.355 | 024-2222271
  2. SLR Northern Line, row 33: Vavuniya | | 024-2222271
  3. Same name, same line, same number → merged. The row carrying
  4. the distance wins; the discard is recorded, not dropped silently.
  5. Previous: Erittaperiyakulam, 254.355 − 249.038 = 5.317 → 5.32 km
  6. Next: none. Vavuniya is the farthest Northern station SLR
  7. gives a distance for, so the card says exactly that
  8. rather than implying the line ends at Vavuniya.
  9. (It does not: Jaffna and Kankesanthurei are in the same table,
  10. with their numbers, but with no distance published.)

The edge case this page refuses to paper over

Dematagoda, the no-number path, 136 of 303 stations

  1. SLR Main Line row: Dematagoda | 3.668 |
  2. Distance present, telephone cell empty at source.
  3. Distance: 3.668 km → displayed 3.67 km from Colombo Fort
  4. Telephone: none published.
  5. Shown as: "Sri Lanka Railways does not publish a telephone number
  6. for this station" + the 1971 information line.
  7. NOT shown: Maradana's number, 1.8 km up the line. A number that
  8. rings the wrong station is worse than no number.

Two blank cells, two labelled fills

Colombo Fort, the only derived row on the page

  1. SLR Coast Line row: Fort | |
  2. Both cells blank, for the busiest station on the network.
  3. Distance: 0 km, by definition. Every other distance in this
  4. table is 'from Fort', so Fort is the datum.
  5. Telephone: 011-2434215, from SLR's Head Office Details page
  6. ("Fort Railway Station Inquiries: +94 11 2 434215"),
  7. not from the Station Details table.
  8. Next: Secretariat Halt, 0.666 − 0 = 0.666 → 0.67 km
  9. Both fills are listed in the derived-values table below.

Stations per line

Every count here is computed from the rows the tool renders, so this table and the tables inside the tool cannot disagree. "Rows" is what Sri Lanka Railways prints; "stations" is what is left after the repeated rows are merged.

Three short tables, so nothing about the transcription has to be taken on trust. Everything not in them came straight off the official page.

Spellings changed (15)

SLR printsShown hereWhy
FortColombo FortThe Station Details table prints the bare "Fort"; SLR's own Head Office Details page calls it the Fort Railway Station, and outside Colombo it is universally Colombo Fort. "Fort" stays a search key.
PoplgahawelaPolgahawelaTransposed letters; the junction is Polgahawela on every SLR timetable.
MihirigamaMirigamaInserted syllable; the town and the SLR timetable both read Mirigama.
WlakuburaWalakumburaTransposed letters in the first syllable.
ElleEllaThe hill-country town is Ella; SLR's own timetables spell it so.
AvisawellaAvissawellaDropped letter; SLR's KV line timetable spells it Avissawella.
NanuoyaNanu OyaRun-together words; the station serving Nuwara Eliya is Nanu Oya.
Trade ZooneTrade ZoneDoubled vowel in an English word.
Secretartat HaltSecretariat HaltTransposed letters in an English word.
KompnnavidiyaKompannavidiyaDropped vowel; the Colombo halt is Kompannavidiya (Slave Island).
Mount LaviniyaMount LaviniaThe Colombo suburb is Mount Lavinia in English.
GreatwesternGreat WesternRun-together words; two words on SLR's own hill-country timetable.
ElephantPassElephant PassRun-together words in an English place name.
Kaluthara SouthKalutara SouthThe same table spells the town Kalutara in the Kalutara North row two rows above.
Katunayaka AirportKatunayake AirportThe same table spells the town Katunayake in the Katunayake row below.

Eight more names start in lower case in the official table ("weligama", "kekirawa") and two leave the second word lower case ("Payagala south"). Those are capitalised by a mechanical rule, not corrected one by one.

Values not taken from the Station Details table (2)

StationFieldValueWhere it came from
Colombo FortkmFromFort0 kmNot an estimate. Every other distance in the Station Details table is the column "Distance in KM - from Fort", so Colombo Fort is the datum the whole table is measured from, and its own distance from itself is zero by definition.
Colombo Fortphone011-2434215Published by Sri Lanka Railways as "Fort Railway Station Inquiries: +94 11 2 434215" on its Head Office Details page, not in the Station Details table. It is the only official telephone number SLR publishes for Colombo Fort.

Rows merged (3) and numbers flagged (2)

  • Parasangahawewa (Northern Line) — Sri Lanka Railways lists this station twice on the same line, the second time with the distance cell blank. The row carrying the distance (217.73 km) is the one kept; the discarded row's telephone number is identical.
  • Medawachchiya (Northern Line) — Sri Lanka Railways lists this station twice on the same line, the second time with the distance cell blank. The row carrying the distance (230.92 km) is the one kept; the discarded row's telephone number is identical.
  • Vavuniya (Northern Line) — Sri Lanka Railways lists this station twice on the same line, the second time with the distance cell blank. The row carrying the distance (254.36 km) is the one kept; the discarded row's telephone number is identical.
  • Seeduwa (repaired) — Sri Lanka Railways prints this as 11-2253571, nine digits with the trunk zero missing. 011 is Colombo's only area code, so the leading zero is restored here; no digit is changed.
  • Katugastota (malformed) — Sri Lanka Railways prints this as nine digits where a Sri Lankan fixed line has ten, and the missing digit cannot be worked out from the source. It is shown exactly as published, if it does not connect, call the 1971 railway information line.

Spot checks against the official table

These 9 rows were read off the Sri Lanka Railways pages by hand on 2026-10-02 and kept apart from the generated table. On every render the page re-reads them out of the live data and compares all five fields, and the badge on the tool reports the result, so if a future re-transcription shifts a column, they disagree and the badge turns red. The last four are the awkward rows on purpose: a station with no number, one with no distance, the repaired number and the derived row.

A build-time script does the rest. It re-asserts the worked examples above, re-parses the saved transcription row for row against what ships, and reconciles every rail distance against Sri Lanka Railways' own fare tables, an independently transcribed second source, failing the build on a disagreement wider than 100 m. On the 55 stations both sources carry, the widest disagreement is 13 m.
