How it works

Sri Lanka charges a per-annum residence-visa feeset in US dollars, and the amount depends only on the visa category and how many people are on the visa. This calculator reads the published fee schedule from the Department of Immigration & Emigration and multiplies out the cost for the whole family over the number of years you plan to stay. There is no estimation — every rate is a printed government figure.

The method has four steps:

  1. Look up the principal per-annum fee for the chosen category. Most categories are USD 200; former Sri Lankan citizens and Indians under the Indo-Ceylon Agreement pay a reduced USD 100; the Digital Nomad category is USD 500; and the foreign spouse of a Sri Lankan citizen is free.
  2. Determine the dependent fee. For standard and reduced categories, the spouse and each child pay the same rate as the principal. For the free foreign-spouse category, the spouse is free but each foreign-passport child is USD 150 per year. For the Digital Nomad category, dependants pay the standard USD 200.
  3. Count chargeable people: the principal, plus the spouse if included, plus the number of dependent children.
  4. Apply the formula total = principal×years + spouse×years + child×children×years then divide by years for the annual cost and by the number of people for the per-person cost.

The tool verifies every total two independent ways: the multiplication formula above, and a second method that lists each person's fee and sums it across every year. Both must match to the cent before a result is shown — the small “cross-checked” badge on the breakdown confirms they agree. The optional rupee figure multiplies the USD total by an exchange rate you enter; it is indicative only, because residence-visa fees are denominated and paid in US dollars.

Worked examples

Foreign employee + family · 2 years

USD 1,200

  1. Category: Employment → USD 200/yr per person
  2. Principal: 200 × 1 × 2 = USD 400
  3. Spouse: 200 × 1 × 2 = USD 400
  4. 1 child: 200 × 1 × 2 = USD 400
  5. Total = USD 1,200 (USD 600/year, USD 400/person)

Foreign spouse of a Sri Lankan · 3 years, 1 child

USD 450

  1. Category: Foreign spouse of a Sri Lankan → spouse visa Free
  2. Principal (foreign spouse): 0 × 3 = USD 0
  3. 1 foreign-passport child: 150 × 1 × 3 = USD 450
  4. Total = USD 450 (USD 150/year, USD 225/person)

Digital nomad · single, 1 year

USD 500

  1. Category: Digital Nomad → USD 500/yr principal
  2. Principal: 500 × 1 × 1 = USD 500
  3. No dependants
  4. Total = USD 500
