Indicative only. Cut-offs are previous-cycle values from the UGC Admissions Handbook, rounded to 0.01. The current-year cut-off depends on the year's candidate distribution — this tool is guidance, not a prediction. The catalogue covers the 31 most-searched programmes; for the long tail, consult the full UGC handbook PDF linked below the calculator.

How it works

State-university admission in Sri Lanka is decided by the University Grants Commission using three quota pools, all keyed on the candidate Z-score that the Department of Examinations publishes after each A/L cycle. This tool reproduces the quota logic from the UGC Admissions Handbook and applies it to whichever Z-score, stream, and district you enter.

  1. Filter by stream. Each programme lists the A/L subject stream(s) it admits from — Physical Science feeds Engineering and Computer Science, Biological Science feeds Medicine, Veterinary and Pharmacy, and so on. Programmes outside your stream are dropped.
  2. Filter by Common General Test. Engineering, IT, Law and Architecture programmes require a sat CGT mark. If you toggle CGT off, the tool drops those programmes from the catalogue.
  3. Compare against three cut-offs. For every surviving programme, your Z is checked against the All-Island Merit cut-off (top 40% of seats), the District-Quota cut-off for your specific district (55% of seats), and — if your district is on the UGC's Educationally Disadvantaged Districts (EDD) list — the EDD cut-off (5% reserved seats).
  4. Pick the easiest qualifying quota. If you clear more than one cut-off, the tool reports the quota with the lowest cut-off Z — that gives you the most comfortable margin and is the quota you are most likely to be admitted under.
  5. Rank by gap. Cleared programmes are sorted by gap = your Z − applied cut-off, tightest first. Near-misses (programmes you missed by a small Z delta you control via the slider) are listed separately so you can see what would open up with a higher Z.

The check is deterministic — a single O(n) pass over the catalogue, with no probabilities and no estimation. Where the data necessarily involves judgement is the cut-off matrix itself: Sri Lankan cut-offs are published per A/L cycle and depend entirely on that cycle's candidate distribution. We therefore store the most recently published values as indicative and link the source handbook so you can verify any specific number before making an application.

Worked examples

Physical Science · Galle (mid-tier district) · Z = 1.7234 · CGT sat

  1. Stream filter: keep 11 Physical Science programmes.
  2. CGT filter: keep all 11 (CGT sat).
  3. Compare Z = 1.7234 against each programme's Merit / Galle-district / EDD cut-off (Galle is not an EDD district).
  4. BSc Engineering (Peradeniya): district cut-off ≈ 1.68 → cleared with gap +0.0434.
  5. BSc Engineering (Moratuwa): district cut-off ≈ 1.74 → near-miss by 0.0166.
  6. Headline: 10 cleared (via district quota), 1 near-miss within 0.05 Z.

Biological Science · Anuradhapura (EDD district) · Z = 1.8500

  1. Stream filter: keep 13 Biological Science programmes.
  2. EDD eligibility on: Anuradhapura is on the UGC EDD list.
  3. MBBS (Colombo): EDD cut-off ≈ 1.68 → cleared via EDD with gap +0.17.
  4. MBBS (Peradeniya): EDD cut-off ≈ 1.65 → cleared via EDD with gap +0.20.
  5. BDS (Peradeniya): EDD cut-off ≈ 1.65 → cleared via EDD with gap +0.20.
  6. Headline: 13 cleared, all via the EDD quota (the lowest of the three cut-offs).

Arts · Colombo (top-tier district) · Z = 1.2500 · CGT not sat

  1. Stream filter: keep Arts-eligible programmes (BA General × 2 + LLB).
  2. CGT filter: drop LLB (Law requires CGT).
  3. BA General (Peradeniya): district cut-off ≈ 1.05 → cleared with gap +0.20.
  4. BA General (Kelaniya): district cut-off ≈ 1.02 → cleared with gap +0.23.
  5. Headline: 2 cleared, 0 near-miss; LLB Colombo opens up if CGT is sat.
