Snap Specs: what a 2029 timeline means for builders
Snap's CEO dodged Specs preorder questions and said mass adoption is years out. Here's why that long runway is actually useful if you write software from Sri Lanka.

Snap Specs preorder numbers were the one thing analysts wanted on the Q2 earnings call, and CEO Evan Spiegel didn't give them. He gave something more interesting instead: a date. Mass-market consumer adoption of AR glasses, he said, won't happen until closer to the end of the decade.
I read that as a signal, not a disappointment. When a CEO who has spent over a decade on a product tells you it's three or four years from real volume, he is telling you exactly how much time you have.
This post comments on TechCrunch's report on Snap's Q2 earnings call. The reporting is theirs; the argument below is mine.
🔍 What Spiegel actually said, and what he skipped
The non-answer matters as much as the answer. Asked about preorder demand, Spiegel's response was that people want to try Specs before they buy — a reasonable point about a face-worn device, and also a clean way to avoid quoting a number.
What he did commit to:
- Mass-market adoption lands closer to the end of the decade, not now.
- Weight and cost both have to come down before volume moves meaningfully.
- Snap holds a first-mover position in AR glasses, unlike its late arrival to social media.
- Developers have been building on the Specs platform for several years already.
- Specs were unveiled in June 2026, with a launch event in September.
When a company skips the demand number but volunteers the adoption timeline, the timeline is the message. Spiegel is managing expectations down for the device and up for the platform.
💰 The price gap is the whole story
Specs are $2,195. That number sits in an awkward place in the current market:

Here is the counterintuitive part. If Specs were selling millions of units this quarter, a two-person team in Sri Lanka would already be too late. Well-funded studios would have shipped the obvious apps in month one.
A three-to-four year runway changes the maths:
- No land grab yet. The category's winners haven't been decided, because the category doesn't have a mass audience to win.
- Cheap experimentation. Platform SDKs and simulators cost nothing but time. The expensive part is the hardware, and you can defer that.
- Compounding, not sprinting. Spiegel noted developers have been on the platform for years. Skill built now is skill that's mature when the price finally drops.
- Fewer competitors are paying attention. Most teams read "mass adoption in 2029" and stop reading. That's the opening.

🌐 The part that doesn't reach here for years
I should be honest about a limit. Even when AR glasses get cheap, the software layer arrives in Sri Lanka late. Region-locked app stores, English-and-a-few-languages voice models, maps that know Manhattan better than Maharagama — that's the usual pattern, and there's no reason to assume this platform breaks it.
That's a market, not a complaint. Sinhala and Tamil voice interaction, local navigation, and content built for a Sri Lankan user are gaps nobody in California is prioritising. The people who close them will be local, and they'll need the skills in the table above.
💡 What this means for you
Spiegel refused the preorder question because the answer probably isn't flattering. But he replaced it with a genuinely useful piece of information, and I'd act on that rather than the dodge.
- Don't buy Specs. At $2,195 before import costs, with a CEO forecasting years to mass adoption, it's a bad purchase for a small team.
- Do start the fundamentals now. WebXR and Three.js run in the browser you already have.
- Treat the timeline as runway, not a delay. Four years is enough to go from zero to genuinely good at spatial software.
- Watch the price, not the launch event. The signal to invest seriously is Specs — or a competitor — dropping toward the Meta Ray-Ban range. That's when weight and cost have actually come down.
The September launch event will produce a lot of noise. The number worth tracking isn't announced on stage; it's the price tag two or three generations from now.
