Rumesh Pathirage wins the Diamond League Final — a first for Sri Lanka

Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage became the first Sri Lankan athlete to win a Diamond League Final, taking the men's javelin title in Brussels on September 5, 2026, with a throw of 89.04 metres in the third round.

The 23-year-old, competing at King Baudouin Stadium in the season-closing Memorial Van Damme meet, beat Poland's Dawid Wegner, who threw a personal best of 87.47m for second, and 2012 Olympic champion Keshorn Walcott of Trinidad and Tobago, who took third with a season-best 83.99m. Pathirage went into the final ranked world No. 1 in the men's javelin. His season peak came in June, when he threw 92.62m at Rome's Stadio Olimpico — a Sri Lankan national record and, per World Athletics' own report on that meet, the world's longest throw of 2026. The Brussels win also earns him the 2026 Diamond Trophy in the men's javelin.

It caps a breakout year. In July, Pathirage won javelin gold at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow with a throw of 89.75m — Sri Lanka's first-ever athletics gold at a Commonwealth Games.

The bigger picture: Asian javelin has largely meant India's Neeraj Chopra and Pakistan's Arshad Nadeem for the past several years. A Sri Lankan now holds the world's best mark of the season and a Diamond League Final title, which is a real shift in who the region's best-known throwers are.
