Sri Lanka Tourist Arrivals Dip 3.3% in August, Still Pass 1.5 Million for the Year

Sri Lanka received 191,704 foreign tourists in August 2026, a 3.3% drop from the same month last year, according to arrival figures reported by EconomyNext and independently confirmed by the Economic Times Sri Lanka.

India stayed the largest source market by a wide margin, sending 47,253 visitors — roughly a quarter of all arrivals for the month. The UK followed with 19,588 tourists, then China with 12,321.

The August count brings Sri Lanka's cumulative tourist arrivals for the first eight months of 2026 to 1,535,122.

A single month's dip doesn't say much on its own — August isn't a peak travel month for Sri Lanka to begin with. What's worth watching is whether the slowdown carries into the final quarter of the year, when arrivals typically pick up, and whether Sri Lanka holds its ground against regional competitors like the Maldives and Thailand once that peak-season data starts coming in.

The concentration in a handful of markets is also worth flagging. India, the UK, and China together account for a large share of arrivals so far this year. That's efficient to market to, but it also means a currency shift, a visa policy change, or a rival destination's push in any one of those countries can move the national numbers by itself.

Tourism sits alongside remittances and apparel exports as one of Sri Lanka's biggest sources of foreign exchange, which is why monthly arrival counts get tracked closely as a read on how the recovery from the 2022 economic crisis is holding up.
