Avatar video vs text-to-video — what's the difference?

An avatar generator turns a script into a human presenter reading it — the tools on this page. A text-to-video generator (Sora, Veo, Runway, Kling) turns a prompt into a cinematic clip with no fixed presenter. Comparing those instead? Use the AI Video Generator Comparison. Want a cost-only breakdown? Try the AI Avatar Video Cost Calculator.

Static comparison — nothing is sent to any AI vendor.

Filtering and cost math run entirely in your browser; no account, key or query leaves this page. Pricing in this category changes often — every figure traces to the vendor's own pricing page (see Sources below), last checked 2026-07-12. LKR is indicative, using the editable Rs 305/USD rate.

How it works

An AI avatar video generator turns a written script into a video of a human-looking presenter reading it to camera. Instead of filming yourself, you type or paste a script, pick a stock avatar (or a custom one of your own face), choose a voice and language, and the tool renders a talking-presenter video. This page lines up the 8 tools a Sri Lankan freelancer, marketer, trainer or faceless creator actually chooses between — HeyGen, Synthesia, D-ID, Colossyan, Vidnoz, Elai.io, Creatify and Argil — across the facts that decide which one fits.

1. Cost per finished minute

Plans in this category are priced wildly differently — some by month, some by credits, some by video length — so a raw monthly price tells you little. The fair yardstick is cost per finished minute, computed on each vendor's cheapest paid plan:

cost_per_minute = entry_plan_monthly_price ÷ included_minutes

Where a vendor uses a credit model, credits are converted to minutes using the vendor's own stated rate (for example D-ID bills roughly one credit per second, so 300 credits = 5 minutes) before the same formula is applied. A second arithmetic route, costPerMinuteAnnualUsd(), recomputes the same figure from the annual-billing price so the table can show how much cheaper each minute is when billed yearly.

2. Your monthly cost

For the minutes you actually need each month (M), the tool estimates a real monthly cost using the vendor's own published rules, in this order:

  1. If Mis within the plan's included minutes, the cost is simply the plan price.
  2. If the vendor publishes a per-extra-minute overage rate (Elai charges USD 2 per extra minute), the cost is the plan price plus overage.
  3. Otherwise, the tool steps up to the cheapest published tier whose allowance covers M.
  4. If no published plan is large enough and there is no overage rate, the tool shows Enterprise / contact sales rather than inventing a number.

3. The pick-for-me matcher

Each hard filter only ever narrows the set: a tool must satisfy every active filter to survive. Budget keeps tools whose cheapest qualifying plan is within your monthly budget; Free-tier keeps only tools with a genuine free tier; Custom-avatar keeps tools that can clone your face; and the language toggles require a Tamil or Sinhala voice. Survivors are ranked by cost per finished minute ascending, ties broken by the larger included allowance, then a fixed editor tiebreak — so identical inputs always produce identical order.

4. Sinhala and Tamil reality check

For local users this is often the deciding factor. As of 2026-07-12, none of these tools publish a Sinhala presenter voice, so a Sinhala requirement honestly returns zero matches. Tamil is supported by the larger multilingual platforms (Synthesia, HeyGen, Vidnoz, D-ID, Colossyan, Elai) whose 75+ to 175+ language libraries include it. The table's Tamil column and the Sinhala note make this explicit instead of hiding it.

5. The LKR column is indicative

Every USD figure multiplies by an editable rate that defaults to the CBSL indicative Rs 305per USD to produce the rupee columns. It is a constant, not a live feed — your bank's actual rate plus FX margin and card fees will differ by a few percent. Change the rate field to match your bank, or use the Freelancer USD-LKR calculator for a live rate.

Worked examples

Budget $30, 15 min/month, English — a Colombo reels freelancer

She produces weekly product-explainer reels for a client on about $30/month and needs roughly 15 finished minutes. Custom avatar off, English.

  1. Filters: budget = $30, minutes = 15, custom avatar = off, language = English.
  2. Entry plans over $30 are excluded: Creatify ($33) and Argil ($39) drop out.
  3. Cost per finished minute (monthly billing): HeyGen $29÷30 = $0.97; D-ID $5.99÷5 = $1.20; Colossyan $27÷20 = $1.35; Vidnoz $24.99÷15 = $1.67; Elai $29÷15 = $1.93; Synthesia $29÷10 = $2.90.
  4. Best pick = HeyGen Creator — lowest cost per finished minute within the budget.
  5. Monthly cost: 15 min is within HeyGen's 30-minute allowance → $29 → about Rs 8,845 at Rs 305/USD.

Free tier required, 3 min/month — a student testing the idea

A student wants to try avatar video for a class project at zero cost and needs about 3 minutes a month. Free tier required.

  1. Filter: Free tier only = on. Tools with no standing free tier (Elai, Argil) are excluded.
  2. Free tiers: Vidnoz ~90 min/mo (3/day), HeyGen/Synthesia/Colossyan/D-ID ~3 min/mo, Creatify ~0.5 min.
  3. Cost per finished minute = $0 for every free tier, so the tie-break is free minutes.
  4. Best pick = Vidnoz — most generous free tier (about 3 minutes a day, watermarked 720p).
  5. Monthly cost = $0 → Rs 0 (no NaN). Note the watermark and 720p cap on the free tier.

Edge case — needing more minutes than the entry plan includes

A localisation team on Elai needs 20 finished minutes but the Basic plan only includes 15 — how the overage rule and the too-big case behave.

  1. Elai Basic includes 15 min at $29/mo and publishes a $2 per-extra-minute overage.
  2. 20 min needed → 20 > 15, so cost = $29 + (20 − 15) × $2 = $29 + $10 = $39/mo.
  3. D-ID needing 12 min: Lite includes 5, no overage, so it steps up to Pro (15 min) = $49.90/mo.
  4. HeyGen needing 600 min: over the 30-minute plan, no overage, no covering tier → shows Enterprise / contact sales, not a made-up number.
  5. Boundary and zero: exactly 30 min on HeyGen still costs the $29 plan; 0 min still costs the plan minimum — the matcher never returns a silent NaN.
