What this does

Enter your name, the job title, and a few skills (or paste the job ad), pick a tone and length, then generate a tailored one-page cover letter. You get a copy-ready letter plus four editable paragraphs — opening, motivation, evidence and closing — so you can make it your own in a minute or two. Try a sample above to see it work.

The draft is AI-assisted — always read it, add specifics, and check the facts before you send it. Copying and downloading happen entirely in your browser; nothing you type is stored.

How it works

The generator builds your letter from the cover-letter structure taught by three widely used careers guides: Harvard's Resumes and Cover Letters, the UK's Prospects Cover letters guide, and the Indeed Career Guide. All three agree on the same shape — a one-page letter of three or four short paragraphs, tailored to one specific role — and this tool enforces it every time.

  1. Opening.Names the exact role (and company, if you gave one) and frames your experience level — a fresh graduate's eagerness or a professional's track record.
  2. Motivation. Says why this role and this employer interest you. If you pasted a job ad, it references the responsibilities it describes.
  3. Evidence. Echoes the skills you listed — or the ones pulled from the job ad — as your reason to be considered. It never adds a skill you did not supply.
  4. Closing. Ends with a polite call to action, a mention of your CV, and a sign-off that matches your spelling choice.

The assembly is deterministic: the same inputs always produce the same letter, so it runs in your browser even offline and every worked example below can be checked by hand. British spelling gives you “organisation”, “CV”, and “Yours faithfully” (the correct sign-off when the recipient is not named); American gives you “organization”, “resume”, and “Sincerely”. British lists drop the Oxford comma; American lists keep it. The date format follows the same convention. A live word count flags anything outside the 200–400-word one-page band.

A model-transparency note: the letter is produced by a rule-based engine, not a large language model, so it is predictable and never invents employers, qualifications, or achievements. When a small language model is enabled on the server it may refine the wording of a single paragraph, but only if the result passes a quality check — length, no clichés, no stray greeting. Output is AI-assisted and should always be read, personalised, and fact-checked before you send it. The structure conventions were last verified on 2026-07-10.

Worked examples

Fresh-graduate internship

Nimasha Perera · Trainee Software Engineer · Ceylon Systems · skills: React, Node.js, Git · 0 years · Formal · British

  1. Salutation: “Dear Hiring Manager,” (exactly one).
  2. Date: “10 July 2026” (British day-month-year).
  3. Opening frames a recent graduate “eager to begin my career”.
  4. Evidence echoes “React, Node.js and Git” verbatim — no Oxford comma (British).
  5. Sign-off: “Yours faithfully,” (British, unnamed recipient); CV term “CV”.

Experienced switch, skills only

Ruwan Silva · Digital Marketing Manager · no company · skills: SEO, Google Ads, team leadership · 3–5 years · Confident · American

  1. Company left blank → placeholder renders “your organization” (American spelling).
  2. Opening references “over three years of professional experience”.
  3. Evidence echoes “SEO, Google Ads, and team leadership” — with the Oxford comma (American).
  4. Date: “July 10, 2026” (American month-day-year); CV term “resume”.
  5. Sign-off: “Sincerely,” (American convention). No company name invented.

Pasted job ad, skills auto-pulled

Ishara Fernando · Accounts Executive · Lanka Traders (Pvt) Ltd · job ad pasted, skills field blank · 1–2 years · Friendly · British

  1. Skills field is empty, so the tool scans the job ad against its skill lexicon.
  2. From “…strong Excel skills, experience with QuickBooks…taxation and auditing”, it pulls: Excel, QuickBooks, Taxation, Auditing.
  3. Those skills appear, in order, in the Evidence paragraph.
  4. Opening reflects the 1–2 year band; tone is warm but professional.
  5. Word count lands inside the 200–400 green band for the Standard length.
