Peradeniya Botanical Garden Ticket Price Calculator 2026

There are only two numbers behind this whole page, and the work is in knowing which one applies. The Department of National Botanic Gardens charges a single department-wide schedule at all six of its gate-charging gardens, set by a gazette notification issued by the Minister of Tourism and effective 1 July 2023. That schedule is quoted VAT-exclusive. Each of the department's own garden pages then publishes a VAT-inclusive counter price — but only for its three foreign categories. The local rows appear nowhere on the department's site. Reconciling those two sources is the entire method.

Step 1 — pick the category rate

The gazette sets six lines across the two columns, unchanged since 1 July 2023. This is its wording, verbatim — note that the local Rs 30 line covers a child under 13 and a school pupil of any age, which is why the calculator offers both as separate rows:

• Adults and children over twelve (12) years of Age — Rs 200
• Children below twelve (12) years of Age and school children — Rs 30
• Adults over the age of sixty (60) on producing National Identity Card — Rs 50
• Foreign Adult (Elder than 12) — Rs 3,000 base, Rs 3,540 published
• Foreign Child (5 to 12 Years) — Rs 1,500 base, Rs 1,770 published
• Foreign Student (Must have proof) — Rs 2,000 base, Rs 2,360 published

Step 2 — apply VAT, but only where it is published

VAT has been 18% since 1 January 2024. The counter price is the base rate × 1.18, and that is not an assumption — it reconciles exactly against all three figures the department publishes, in all six gardens:

Step 3 — treat the local column honestly

The department publishes no VAT-inclusive local figure anywhere. So this page shows the gazetted Rs 200 / Rs 30 / Rs 50 as the headline local price — that is what visitors report paying at the counter — and offers the same VAT step as a clearly-labelled secondary strip (Rs 236 / Rs 35.40 / Rs 59). The VAT-added local figure is never presented as a confirmed gate price, because no source confirms it. Carry a little extra and you are covered either way.

Step 4 — total, and cross-check it

The total is the plain sum: Σ (count × rate) across the categories entered. No rounding is applied to line totals. The calculator then computes the same answer a second way — summing the VAT-exclusive base rates and applying the 18% step once to the whole subtotal — and reports whether the two routes agree. They must, because multiplication distributes over addition; a disagreement would mean a transcription error in the rate table rather than a rounding artefact, which is exactly what the “Reconciled” badge is watching for.

Where the schedule is genuinely ambiguous

Two readings need a decision, and both are resolved by the department's own pages rather than by guesswork. First, the phrase “school children” appears in both foreign lines — the Rs 1,500 one and the Rs 2,000 one. The garden pages split them into “Foreign Student (Must have proof)” at Rs 2,360 and “Foreign Child (5 to 12 Years)” at Rs 1,770, so proof decides which applies. Second, the gazette prices adults as “over twelve” and children as “below twelve”, leaving age 12 in neither; the department's 5–12band closes that gap in the child's favour. The age helper inside the calculator applies both rulings and quotes the band it used.

The price does not change. The hours, the district and the drive do. Every garden is open 365 days a year, 7.30 AM – 6.00 PM, with the ticket counter closing an hour earlier at 5.00 PM.
