Dehiwala Zoo Ticket Price & Sri Lanka Zoo Entry Fee Calculator (2026)

There is no clever arithmetic here, and that is the point. The hard part of “how much is the zoo” in Sri Lanka has never been the multiplication — it is that almost nothing online quotes the current gate price. Travel blogs and reseller pages still carry pre-2024 rupee figures, and resellers quote bundled prices that are not the gate price at all. So every rate in this tool is transcribed from one place: the four facility pages the Department of National Zoological Gardens publishes itself, read on 2026-09-25.

1. Pick the rate card. Each facility publishes its own table. Dehiwala, the Elephant Orphanage and Pinnawala Open Zoo share the same local rates — Rs 295 adult, Rs 118 child, Rs 59 school group — while Ridiyagama Safari Park is exactly double at Rs 590 / Rs 236 / Rs 118. The foreign columns differ more: Pinnawala Open Zoo charges a non-SAARC adult USD 11.80 where the other three charge USD 17.70.
2. Price entry by residency. For a Sri Lankan party,entry = adults × localAdult + children × localChildin rupees. For a SAARC or other-foreign party the published rate is in dollars, so the sum is taken in dollars and multiplied by the rupees-per-dollar rate you enter. The counter does the same thing with its own rate of the day, which is why that field is editable rather than fixed.
3. Apply the school-group rate at the published threshold. The Department's row reads “School Children (Group of 20+)”, so the group rate applies at 20 children and not at 19. Below the threshold those children are priced as ordinary children and the tool says so — because the threshold has a strange consequence worth knowing. At Dehiwala, 19 children cost Rs 2,242 while 20 children cost only Rs 1,180. One more child makes the trip cheaper.
4. Add only the activities that site publishes. Fruit baskets, river bathing and the elephant walk are Orphanage prices; bird, leopard, herbivore and crocodile feeding, the reptile photo and the buggy cart are Pinnawala Open Zoo prices; the elephant encounter is a Dehiwala price. Ridiyagama publishes none. All of them are rupee prices for every visitor type, local or foreign.
5. For both Pinnawala sites, compare two tickets against one. Two singles cost a foreign adult USD 29.50; the Department's combined ticket costs USD 23.60. The tool prices both and totals the cheaper one. No combined local ticket is published, so a Sri Lankan party is quoted two single tickets and told why.

The VAT cross-check

Those rupee figures look arbitrary until you divide by 1.18. Every published entry fee is a round base fee plus the 18% VAT in force since 1 January 2024 under the Value Added Tax (Amendment) Act No. 32 of 2023. That gives a genuine test of the transcription rather than a restatement of it: if a figure in this module had been mistyped, it would almost certainly stop being an exact 1.18 multiple of a whole rupee. The check runs on every page render and drives the badge on the calculator.

The Pinnawala Open Zoo activity prices (Rs 200, Rs 250, Rs 500, Rs 2,000) are round numbers in their own right and are not 1.18 multiples, so they sit outside this check rather than being forced into it.

What this tool deliberately does not price

Four things are missing on purpose, because guessing them would make the rest less trustworthy. There is no safari vehicle price for Ridiyagama — the facility page publishes entry only. There is no online convenience fee, because the portal says one is charged without saying how much. There is no infant rate, because the published table has two age bands and no third. And there are no reseller or tour operator prices, which is the contradiction that stopped an earlier attempt at this tool from shipping at all.

The four facilities side by side, as the Department publishes them. Local rates in rupees; SAARC and other-foreign rates in US dollars, collected in rupees at the counter's rate.

Child rates are half the adult rate in every foreign column. The combined Pinnawala ticket, published on both Pinnawala pages, is USD 23.60 for a foreign adult and USD 11.80 for a SAARC adult. Read 2026-09-25; verify with the calculator above.
