Sri Lanka Buddhist Era Year Converter

Sri Lanka counts years in the Buddhist Era (බුද්ධ වර්ෂ) from the Parinirvāṇa of the Buddha, which Theravāda tradition places at 544 BCE. That makes the era count one year ahead of the international convention that counts from 543 BCE. The other difference is when the year changes: in Sri Lanka the Buddhist year turns over on Vesak Full Moon Poya Day— the May full moon commemorating the Buddha's birth, enlightenment and passing — not on 1 January.

For a Gregorian date with year G, the tool looks up that year's Vesak Poya day V(G) and applies:

• If the date is on or after V(G): BE = G + 544.
• If the date is before V(G): BE = G + 543.

So for most of the calendar year — Vesak through December — the offset is +544, and only the January-to-Vesak window carries +543. The Vesak Poya dates come from the Government Holidays Gazette and the Department of Buddhist Affairs Buddha Jayanthi proclamations; years outside the gazetted set are computed astronomically with the same Meeus lunar-phase engine that powers this site's moon-phase Poya calculator, which reproduces the gazetted single-full-moon years exactly (Vesak 2023 = 5 May, 2024 = 23 May, 2025 = 12 May).

2026 is a special case.It has two full moons in May (1 May and 30 May), making it an Adhi Vesak year. The Ministry's first 2026 calendar labelled 1 May as Vesak, but the Maha Sangha Council and the Government revised it so that 1 May 2026 is Adhi Vesak and 30 May 2026 is the official Vesak Full Moon Poya Day. This converter uses 30 May 2026 as the turnover, which is why a date like 11 July 2026 reads as 2570, matching the officially declared 2570 Buddha Jayanthi.

The reverse direction works the same way: a Buddhist year B in Sri Lankan reckoning begins at Vesak of Gregorian year B − 544 and runs to the following Vesak, so one BE year straddles parts of two Gregorian years. The International fixed mode (used officially in Thailand) ignores Vesak entirely and applies a flat +543 that rolls over on 1 January — it is included only so you are not confused when you see a different figure abroad. Every Sri Lankan result is independently cross-checked against the gazetted Buddha Jayanthi anchor (Vesak 2026 = BE 2570) so the epoch method and the anchor method always agree.
