Sri Lanka A/L & O/L Grade Calculator — Marks to Grade
Enter your G.C.E. subject marks and instantly see the official letter grade for each — A, B, C, S or W/F — plus how many passes and distinctions you have. Uses the Department of Examinations scale. No signup, no ads.
How it works
Sri Lanka's G.C.E. examinations report each subject on a five-band letter scale set by the Department of Examinations. The scale is a flat mapping from raw marks to a grade — there is no curving, weighting, or scaling of the mark itself. The same bands apply at both Ordinary Level (O/L) and Advanced Level (A/L); only the fail letter differs (W at O/L, F at A/L):
- 75–100 → A — Distinction Pass
- 65–74 → B — Very Good Pass
- 55–64 → C — Credit Pass
- 35–54 → S — Ordinary Pass
- 0–34 → W (O/L) / F (A/L) — Fail
For each subject the tool checks which band the mark falls into and assigns the letter. Because the bands are contiguous and inclusive on both ends (…54 | 55…64 | 65…), every whole mark from 0 to 100 lands in exactly one grade, and the boundaries are unambiguous: 75 is an A (not a B), 55 is a C (not an S), and 35 is an S (not a fail). The calculator is verified two ways — an interval lookup and an independent descending-cutoff scan agree on every integer mark from 0 to 100 — so a boundary mark is never mis-graded.
It then tallies the results: a pass is any subject graded S or above (35 marks or more), a distinction is an A grade, and the distribution counts how many subjects landed in each band. The optional grade-point average maps A=4, B=3, C=2, S=1 and W/F=0 and takes the mean over your subjects. That 4-point figure is a convention students use for overseas applications — it is labelled clearly and is not an official Department of Examinations measure. This tool deliberately stops at marks-to-grades: it does not compute an A/L Z-score or decide O/L qualification, which follow different official rules and have their own dedicated tools linked below.

The A/B/C/S/W-F mark bands were last cross-checked against the Department of Examinations result-sheet grade legend on 2026-07-09. This is a long-standing national scale; the page is reviewed whenever the Department revises the published grading scheme.
