Grade bands and the A/L eligibility rule follow the. National minimum only — some schools set higher bars for popular streams.

How it works

This tool applies two official rules: the Department of Examinations letter-grade scale that converts a raw subject mark into a grade, and the Ministry of Education admission rule that decides whether your grades let you sit the GCE Advanced Level and enter a stream. No marks are scaled or averaged for the verdict — each subject is graded on its own mark.

Step 1 — marks to grades. In marks mode, each mark m maps to a grade using fixed national boundaries:

  • 75100 marks → A (Distinction)
  • 6574 marks → B (Very Good Pass)
  • 5564 marks → C (Credit Pass)
  • 4054 marks → S (Simple Pass)
  • 039 marks → W (Fail)

Step 2 — classify. A grade of A, B or C is a credit pass; A, B, C or S is a pass; W is a fail. The tool tallies distinctions (A), credit passes (A/B/C), total passes (S and above) and fails (W). Grade mode skips step 1 and takes the letter you enter directly, so it works even if your result sheet shows only grades.

Step 3 — A/L eligibility. Following the national stream-selection guidance, the verdict is one of three outcomes:

  • Eligible for any stream — at least 6 passes at one sitting and credit passes in both the First Language and Mathematics.
  • Arts stream only — Mathematics is not a credit pass, but you have at least 5 credit passes and a credit in your First Language. You may enter Arts and must re-sit O/L Mathematics.
  • Not yet eligible — the tool names the first unmet condition: First Language not a credit, Mathematics not a credit with too few credits, or fewer than 6 passes.

The grade boundaries themselves are verified in code by a dual-method check: every mark from 0 to 100 is graded by a direct comparison chain and independently by scanning the grade-band table, and the two must agree. A rough average of your marks is shown only as context — it is never used to decide a pass, a grade, or eligibility. Individual schools can set higher O/L bars for popular streams; this tool reports the national minimum and says so.

Worked examples

Example 1 — Science-stream hopeful (Eligible)

Eligible for A/L — any stream you qualify for

  1. Marks: Sinhala 82, Maths 68, Science 59, English 45, History 72, Buddhism 88, Geography 51, Commerce 40, ICT 77.
  2. Grades: Sinhala A, Maths B, Science C, English S, History B, Buddhism A, Geography S, Commerce S, ICT A.
  3. Distinctions (A) = 3; credit passes (A/B/C) = Sinhala, Maths, Science, History, Buddhism, ICT = 6.
  4. Passes (S and above) = all 9; fails = 0.
  5. First Language Sinhala = A (credit) ✓, Maths = B (credit) ✓, passes 9 ≥ 6 ✓ → Eligible, any stream.

Example 2 — Maths failed (Arts stream only)

Eligible — Arts stream only; re-sit O/L Mathematics

  1. Marks: Sinhala 60, Maths 35, Science 42, English 30, Religion 78, History 56, Geography 48, Health 62, Art 70.
  2. Grades: Sinhala C, Maths W, Science S, English W, Religion A, History C, Geography S, Health C, Art B.
  3. Credit passes (A/B/C) = Sinhala, Religion, History, Health, Art = 5; passes (S+) = 7; fails = 2.
  4. Maths = W, so the any-stream rule fails (no Maths credit).
  5. Credit passes 5 ≥ 5 and First Language Sinhala = C (credit) ✓ → Arts stream only, must re-sit O/L Maths.

Example 3 — First Language not a credit (Not eligible)

Not yet eligible for A/L

  1. Marks: Tamil 48, Maths 70, Science 66, English 58, History 62, Commerce 55, ICT 61.
  2. Grades: Tamil S, Maths B, Science B, English C, History C, Commerce C, ICT C.
  3. Passes (S+) = all 7; credit passes (A/B/C) = 6 (every subject except Tamil).
  4. First Language Tamil = S (40–54) — a pass, but not a credit pass.
  5. A credit in the First Language is required for every stream, including Arts → Not yet eligible; the shortfall named is the First Language.

The grade bands and A/L admission rule were last cross-checked against these sources on 2026-07-13. This tool reports the national minimum qualification only; some schools set higher bars for popular streams, and university admission is decided later by A/L Z-score, not O/L grades.
