How do I calculate the fuel cost of a trip in Sri Lanka?

Three numbers do it: trip distance in kilometres, your vehicle's fuel economy (km per litre or L per 100 km), and the current price per litre at the pump. Litres used = distance ÷ km-per-litre. Total cost = litres × price. This calculator does that automatically using the latest CPC retail prices.

What is the current price of Petrol 92 in Sri Lanka?

Lanka Petrol 92 Octane is Rs 414 per litre, the price set by the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation revision of October 1, 2026 and last checked against CPC on 2026-10-01. CPC revises retail prices roughly once a month under the cost-reflective pricing formula approved by the PUCSL. The price field on this calculator is editable so it stays correct between revisions.

What is the difference between Lanka Auto Diesel and Super Diesel?

Super Diesel has lower sulphur content and is designed for modern common-rail diesel engines (Land Cruiser Prado, late-model BMW/Mercedes diesels, etc.). Auto Diesel suits older diesel cars, vans, lorries and buses. Super Diesel is typically Rs 136 more per litre than Auto Diesel, see the comparison table in the calculator for your exact trip.

How many kilometres per litre does a Toyota Aqua / Wagon R / Alto give in Sri Lanka?

Real-world Sri Lankan averages: Toyota Aqua hybrid 20–24 km/L; Suzuki Wagon R petrol 15–17 km/L; Suzuki Alto 17–19 km/L; Honda Vezel hybrid 18–22 km/L; Toyota Vitz 14–16 km/L; Honda Civic 11–13 km/L; Toyota Hiace KDH diesel 10–12 km/L. Highway driving improves these figures by 15–20%; Colombo traffic worsens them by a similar margin.

How is the CPC monthly fuel price formula calculated?

The Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) approved a cost-reflective fuel pricing formula for CPC. Retail price = landed cost of crude + refining + distribution margin + statutory taxes (Excise + PAL + VAT) + dealer margin. CPC publishes the breakdown for each monthly revision on its official website.

Does the calculator update prices automatically?

Not live, CPC does not publish a public price API. The prices come from this site's Fuel Price Today table, which is checked against CPC by hand (last on 2026-10-01) and feeds every fuel tool here, so one update reprices all of them. The price input is editable, so if CPC announces a revision before the table catches up you can override the prefill and still get an exact answer.

Should I use km-per-litre or L-per-100-km?

Sri Lankan owner's manuals and resale listings use km/L, so most users find that more intuitive. Litres per 100 km (L/100km) is the European standard and is easier to compare directly with fuel cost, lower is always better. The calculator accepts either; use whichever matches the number you actually know.

Is hybrid or EV cost-per-km lower than petrol?

Usually yes. A Toyota Aqua hybrid at 22 km/L costs about Rs 18.82 per km on Petrol 92, against Rs 29.57 for a 14 km/L petrol sedan. An efficient EV charged at home costs about Rs 16.50 per km at the Rs 100/kWh domestic rate that home charging puts a household on, or about Rs 9.00 per km on the time-of-use tariff overnight for a car doing 50 km a day, fixed charge included. How it works

The calculator combines two figures, how far you're going and how efficiently your vehicle converts fuel into kilometres, with the current Ceylon Petroleum Corporation retail price for the fuel grade you select. The math is short, but the numbers underneath have to be right, which is why prices are cross-checked against the CPC retail notice in effect at 2026-10-01and the input is editable so the tool stays useful between CPC's monthly revisions.

Effective distance.If you tick “round trip,” the entered distance is doubled. Everything below uses the effective distance, not the one-way figure.
Normalise fuel economy. You enter either km per litre (Sri Lankan owner-manual standard) or litres per 100 km (European standard). The tool converts internally so the math is identical either way: L/100km = 100 ÷ km/L.
Litres needed. litres = (L/100km × effective distance) ÷ 100. This is mathematically identical to effective distance ÷ km/L , the calculator computes both forms internally as a cross-check.
Total cost. total = litres × price per litre. The price defaults to the CPC retail figure for the selected grade and you can override it whenever CPC revises prices.
Cost per km and per passenger. Total cost ÷ effective distance gives the per-km figure (used for billing client mileage). Total ÷ passengers gives a per-passenger split, useful for ride-shares and out-of-Colombo trips.

CPC publishes four passenger fuel grades, Lanka Petrol 92 Octane (the everyday grade), Lanka Super Petrol 95 Octane (turbocharged and high-compression engines), Lanka Auto Diesel (cars, vans, lorries, buses) and Lanka Super Diesel (low-sulphur for modern common-rail diesels). Prices are revised roughly once a month under the cost-reflective formula approved by the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka. The Lanka IOC notices, which are published alongside CPC's, match within ±LKR 1.

The comparison table at the bottom of the calculator runs the same trip across all four grades at your fuel economy figure, so you can see how a switch from Petrol 92 to Petrol 95 or from Auto Diesel to Super Diesel changes the bottom line. Note that real diesel vehicles almost always achieve better km/L than petrol vehicles of similar size, if you're costing a diesel trip, enter the diesel economy figure (the calculator can't guess engine type from fuel grade).
