Informational real-world ranges from owner reports — not a specification. Your result depends on engine condition, tyre pressure, load and driving style.

Unit conversions use exact SI/NIST constants (1 mile = 1.609344 km, 1 Imp gal = 4.54609 L, 1 US gal = 3.785411784 L). Default fuel prices are Ceylon Petroleum Corporation retail rates. Full sources are listed under the calculator.

How it works

Fuel efficiency is just distance divided by the fuel it took. This calculator measures it the way a workshop would — the full-to-full (brim) method — and then expresses the answer in every unit you are likely to meet, before pricing it in rupees.

  1. Economy from a fill-up. Brim the tank, note the odometer, drive normally, then brim again and read the litres from the pump. km/l = distance ÷ litres. A trip of 420 km on 32.5 L is 12.92 km/l.
  2. Unit conversion. Every other unit is derived from km/l using exact, definitional constants — no estimation:
    • L/100km = 100 ÷ km/l
    • Imperial mpg = km/l × 2.824809
    • US mpg = km/l × 2.352146
The mpg factors come from the exact SI definitions: 1 mile = 1.609344 km, 1 Imperial gallon = 4.54609 L, 1 US gallon = 3.785411784 L. Dividing the gallon size by the mile gives the factor.
  3. Cost per km. cost/km = fuel price ÷ km/l, which is algebraically identical to price × (L/100km) ÷ 100 and to (price × litres) ÷ distance. The math module carries all three formulas and reconciles them, so the worked examples below tie out to the cent. Cost per 100 km is simply cost per km × 100.
  4. Monthly and annual budget. From your commute: litres/month = (daily km × driving days) ÷ km/l, then monthly cost = litres × price, and annual = monthly × 12.

Fuel prices default to the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation retail rate for the grade you pick (from the 2026-05-30revision), but the field is editable — CPC revises prices roughly monthly, so typing the current pump price keeps every figure exact between updates. The “typical ranges” table is informational context from owner reports, not part of the calculation. This tool answers “what does my car return and cost?”; to price one specific trip by route, use the Sri Lanka Fuel Cost Calculator.

Worked examples

Petrol car — fill-up method

420 km on 32.5 L, Petrol 92 @ Rs 434/L

  1. km/l = 420 ÷ 32.5 = 12.92 km/l
  2. L/100km = 100 ÷ 12.92 = 7.74 L/100km
  3. Imperial mpg = 12.92 × 2.824809 = 36.51 mpg
  4. US mpg = 12.92 × 2.352145 = 30.40 mpg
  5. Cost/km = 434 ÷ 12.92 = Rs 33.58/km
  6. Cross-check: 434 × 32.5 = Rs 14,105 over 420 km → Rs 33.58/km ✓

Three-wheeler — monthly commute budget

30 km/l, 35 km/day, 26 days, Petrol 92 @ Rs 434/L

  1. Litres/month = (35 × 26) ÷ 30 = 910 ÷ 30 = 30.33 L
  2. Monthly cost = 30.33 × 434 = Rs 13,164.67
  3. Cross-check via cost/km: (434 ÷ 30) × 910 = Rs 13,164.67 ✓
  4. Annual cost = 13,164.67 × 12 = Rs 157,976

Diesel SUV — converting a manufacturer figure

Maker rates 8.5 L/100km, Auto Diesel @ Rs 407/L

  1. km/l = 100 ÷ 8.5 = 11.76 km/l
  2. Imperial mpg = 11.76 × 2.824809 = 33.23 mpg
  3. Cost/km = 407 × 8.5 ÷ 100 = Rs 34.60/km
  4. Cross-check via km/l: 407 ÷ 11.76 = Rs 34.61/km ✓ (1 cent rounding)
