How it works

Life expectancy is not guessed or modelled here — it is read directly from the Department of Census and Statistics (DCS) national life table for Sri Lanka, 2011–2013. A life table is the standard demographic tool for measuring mortality: starting from 100,000 hypothetical births, it tracks how many survive to each age and how many person-years of life remain. The key output is the expectation of life column, written e(x): the average number of further years a person alive at exact age x can expect to live, given the mortality rates observed across the whole population in 2011–2013.

Formally, e(x) is defined as the total person-years lived above age x, T(x), divided by the number of survivors at age x, l(x):

e(x) = T(x) / l(x)

This calculator stores the DCS l(x) and T(x) columns alongside the published e(x), so it can recompute each value from that identity as an internal cross-check — the “T/l” figure shown in the key-ages table. Every one matches the published e(x), confirming the transcription is correct.

The DCS table is abridged: it publishes e(x) at ages 0, 1, then every five years (5, 10, 15 … 85+), rather than for each single year of age. For an exact age that falls between two tabulated ages, the tool linearly interpolates:

e(a) = e(x₁) + (e(x₂) − e(x₁)) × (a − x₁) / (x₂ − x₁)

Linear interpolation of e(x) between abridged brackets is the standard demographic approximation for single ages and is accurate to well under a year across the working-age range. At a tabulated age the tool returns the published value with no interpolation, and any age of 85 or over uses the open-ended 85+ group figure. Remaining life expectancy is simply e(a); the projected age at death is your age plus e(a); and the projected calendar year is the current year plus e(a) rounded to whole years. Because women and men have separate DCS tables, the tool computes both and shows the gap. No individual health, lifestyle, or income factors enter the calculation — this is a population average, by design.

Worked examples

Male, age 60

  1. Look up e(60) for males in the DCS table = 18.3 years.
  2. Age 60 is a tabulated age, so no interpolation is needed.
  3. Projected age at death = 60 + 18.3 = 78.3.
  4. Projected year (from 2026) = 2026 + round(18.3) = 2044.

Sex gap at birth

Female, newborn (age 0)

  1. e(0) for females = 78.6 years; e(0) for males = 72.0 years.
  2. Projected age at death for the girl = 0 + 78.6 = 78.6.
  3. Female advantage at birth = 78.6 − 72.0 = 6.6 years.
  4. This 6.6-year gap is the headline male–female difference for Sri Lanka.

Linear interpolation

Male, age 62 (between table rows)

  1. 62 sits between tabulated ages 60 (e = 18.3) and 65 (e = 14.7).
  2. Fraction into the bracket = (62 − 60) / (65 − 60) = 2/5 = 0.4.
  3. e(62) = 18.3 + (14.7 − 18.3) × 0.4 = 18.3 − 1.44 = 16.86 years.
  4. Projected age at death ≈ 62 + 16.9 = 78.9; projected year ≈ 2043.
