How much does a .lk domain cost in Sri Lanka?

The LK Domain Registry charges Rs 5,000 per year for a top-level .lk domain (the Economy tier) and Rs 1,000 per year for a single second-level domain such as .com.lk (the Budget tier). Both prices include 18% VAT. Short 2-letter and 3-letter names cost more — see the Premium and Desirable tiers.

What is the difference between .lk and .com.lk price?

A bare top-level .lk domain falls into the Economy tier at Rs 5,000/year. A single second-level domain like .com.lk or .org.lk is the cheaper Budget tier at Rs 1,000/year. If you register .lk together with the bundled second-levels, that is the Standard tier at Rs 8,000/year.

Is VAT included in .lk domain registration?

Yes. The LK Domain Registry has published its prices with 18% VAT already included since 1 January 2024. The figures this calculator shows are the final VAT-inclusive amounts payable to the registry, so there is no separate VAT line to add.

Can I register a .lk domain for multiple years and get a discount?

Yes. The registry applies multi-year discounts: 5% off for 2 years, 20% off for 5 years, and 40% off for 10 years. For example, a Budget domain at Rs 1,000/year costs Rs 4,000 for 5 years instead of Rs 5,000.

Why are 2-letter and short .lk domains more expensive?

Very short names are scarce and in high demand, so the registry places them in premium categories. A 2-letter name (e.g. go.lk) or a 2–7 digit all-numeric name is the Premium tier at Rs 40,000/year. A 3-letter name or an 8–10 digit numeric name is the Desirable tier at Rs 15,000/year.

Is this the price I pay at a reseller?

Not necessarily. These are the official LK Domain Registry rates — the wholesale price the registry charges. Resellers (hosting companies, register.lk, etc.) often add a service fee on top. Use this calculator to know the official price so you can judge whether a reseller quote is fair.

Does this tool check if a .lk domain is available?

No. This is a price tool only — it tells you what a name would cost based on its length, characters and extension. To check availability you need a WHOIS lookup or the registry's search. Availability and pricing are separate questions.

How it works

The LK Domain Registry — operated by the University of Moratuwa and the sole authority for .lk names — publishes a fixed set of annual price tiers. Every quote on this page is one of those published, VAT-inclusive rates; nothing is estimated. The calculator works in three deterministic steps.

Step 1 — detect the annual tier. The registry assigns a name to a tier from its length, characters and level:

Premium: Rs 40,000/yr — a 2-letter name, or a 2–7 digit all-numeric name.
Desirable: Rs 15,000/yr — a 3-letter name, or an 8–10 digit all-numeric name.
Standard: Rs 8,000/yr — the bundle of .lk with .com.lk, .org.lk, .edu.lk, .web.lk and .hotel.lk.
Economy: Rs 5,000/yr — an ordinary top-level .lk name.
Budget: Rs 1,000/yr — a single ordinary second-level name such as example.com.lk.

The Premium and Desirable categories are checked first, because a short or numeric name keeps its premium price regardless of which extension you pick or whether you select the Standard bundle. Only after those are ruled out does the tool look at the bundle, then the top-level vs second-level distinction.

Step 2 — apply the multi-year discount. The registry rewards longer terms: 2 yr → 5%, 5 yr → 20%, 10 yr → 40%. A single year has no discount.

Step 3 — total it up. The total payable is baseAnnual × years × (1 − discount), rounded to the nearest rupee, and the effective cost per year is that total divided by the number of years. Because VAT is already inside the tier price, no separate tax is added. The same total is computed a second way internally — by subtracting the discount as a saving from the gross — and both methods must agree to the rupee before a figure is shown.
