Sri Lanka Motor Traffic Department Office & Contact Number
Pick your district and the job you need done. This tool gives you the Department of Motor Traffic office that serves you, its address and telephone number, and — the part that saves the wasted trip — whether the job can actually be finished there or has to go to Werahera or the Narahenpita head office. All 25 districts, from dmt.gov.lk.
How it works
There is no arithmetic on this page. There is a transcription, a lookup, and a rule about what to do when the source is silent — and the tool is worth using only if all three are exactly what the Department of Motor Traffic publishes. So all three are written out here.
1. District to office
Every office row comes from DMT's Contact Details page, specifically its “Werahera and Districts Offices” table, read on 2026-09-28when that page's footer said “Last Update: 07 September 2026”. The table holds 25rows — one per administrative district — giving the host building (almost always the District Secretariat), the telephone number, and in one case a fax. The head office postal address and main line come from DMT's Inquiry page, because the Contact Details table serves most of its e-mail column behind a spam guard.
Colombo district maps to Werahera: DMT publishes no separate Colombo district office, and Werahera is the Colombo-district licensing complex as well as the seat of the driving-licence division. DMT's own spellings are kept beside the canonical district name rather than corrected silently — its table reads “Vauniya”, “Puttlam”, “Baddulla” and “District Secretarial”, and a search for any of those still lands on the right row.
Three facts about that table you would only find by counting it, and all three are surfaced rather than smoothed over: DMT publishes a telephone number for 24 of the 25 offices and none for one (Mullaitivu), so that result offers the head office line instead of a blank; it prints the same number, +94 242 222 372, against both Vavuniya and Kilinochchi, so the Kilinochchi card says the call may reach Vavuniya; and every published number is checked mechanically against the shape +94 followed by exactly nine digits, which all of them satisfy.
2. Service to placement
The second table is the one that prevents the wasted trip. Each of the 9 services carries a placement — Done at your district office, District office — motorcycles only, Head office (Narahenpita) only, Online — no office visit, Not a DMT service or Confirm by phone — and the URL of the DMT page that put it there. The result card shows you that sentence and that link, so you can check the claim rather than take it.
The sharpest one is first registration. DMT writes that the documents for registering a motor vehicle “can be handed over to the relevant registration branch at the Head Office of the Department of Motor Traffic situated at Narahenpita, Colombo 05” and that “only motor bicycles are registered in DMT branch of District Secretariats”. So a motorcycle can be registered at your district office and a car cannot, which is why this tool splits DMT's single first-registration service into two. DMT's dedicated Moped Registration page currently reads “This page is under constructions”, so the motorcycle rule is cited to the Vehicle First Registration page, which is where DMT actually states it.
Ownership transfers go the other way: DMT accepts them “at the Normal service counters of the relevant transfer branches of the Department of Motor Traffic, Colombo 05 or a district office of Motor Traffic or the relevant Divisional Secretariat”, so the district office is enough — unless you want the One Day Transfer Service, which is head office only.
3. What happens when DMT does not say
2 of the 9 services ship as Confirm by phone: getting a duplicate licence or changing your name or address on one, and converting an old or foreign licence. No DMT page names an office for either, and neither is among the five services its appointments portal books against a district office. A guess there is exactly the failure this page exists to prevent, so the tool says so and hands you the number to ring. Nothing on this page is inferred from what a service “probably” does.
4. The online (same-day) licence method
DMT's New Driving License page splits licence issue into two methods. The online method runs at 8 offices (Werahera (Colombo), Gampaha, Kalutara, Hambantota, Jaffna, Anuradhapura, Kurunegala, Monaragala); at those, the photograph is taken during the computer process and you bring none. The remaining 17district offices use the offline method, where two passport-size black-and-white photographs on a white background are required. DMT marks “printing available” beside Hambantota and Anuradhapura only, so this page reports printing for those two and says “ask” for the rest rather than assuming.
Fees are deliberately absent. Four calculators on this site already own them, each with its own cited schedule, and restating an amount here is how a figure goes stale in two places at once. The result card links straight to whichever one prices your job.
Verified against the source
The transcription claim is only worth something if it is checkable, so the checks run on every render and their result is printed here rather than asserted.

|---|---|
| Districts covered, one office each | 25 of 25 |

| Services whose placement cites a DMT page | 9 of 9 |
| Services shipped as “confirm by phone” rather than guessed | 2 |

The spot checks are the six cases in the module header, run through the same lookup the tool above uses. A failure would show here before it showed in a result card.

Every office row and every service placement on this page was read off those pages on 2026-09-28. Nothing here is a fee: the amounts live in the calculators linked from each result, each with its own cited schedule. The two things that move — telephone numbers and the online-method district list — are re-checked by 2027-03-28.
