Sri Lanka Required GPA Calculator

Your cumulative GPA (CGPA) is a credit-weighted average: every credit you complete pulls the mean up or down in proportion to its weight. The University Grants Commission's Credit and Semester System defines the CGPA exactly this way on the standard 12-point scale, where A = 4.00 and E = 0.00. This tool takes that definition and solves it backwards.

Let cur be your current CGPA, done the credits you have completed, total the credits your degree requires, and target the CGPA you want. Your remaining credits are rem = total − done. Your final CGPA is the weighted mean of the work already done and the work still ahead:

final_CGPA = (cur × done + G × rem) ÷ total

Setting final_CGPA equal to your target and solving for G — the GPA you need to average on the remaining credits — gives the identity this calculator uses:

G_required = (target × total − cur × done) ÷ rem

The result is then read three ways:

• G ≤ 0 — the target is already secured; even a 0.00 average on the rest keeps your CGPA at or above the target.
• 0 < G ≤ 4.00 — achievable; you need to average that GPA. The figure is rounded up to two decimals so the stated number genuinely clears the target rather than landing a fraction short.
• G > 4.00 — not achievable, because it would need more than the 4.00 grade-point ceiling.

The "Highest CGPA reachable" figure sets every remaining credit to 4.00 — (cur × done + 4.00 × rem) ÷ total — and each honours class is marked reachable only when its band sits at or below that ceiling. Every result is self-checked by plugging the required GPA back into the forward formula: it must return the target to two decimals. Honours-class bands (First ≥ 3.70, Second Upper ≥ 3.30, Second Lower ≥ 3.00, Pass ≥ 2.00) are the commonly adopted defaults and vary by university, so a Custom target input is provided.

Sri Lankan universities convert letter grades to grade points on this standard 12-point scale before averaging. The calculator assumes the same 4.00 ceiling.

Some universities award A+ separately at 4.00 or cap the highest grade at A; either way the ceiling used for "highest reachable" is 4.00.

The GPA identity is pure arithmetic from the UGC cumulative-GPA definition. Only the honours-class bands come from published university by-laws, which differ between institutions — always confirm your own faculty's thresholds, and use the Custom target when they differ.
