How it works

Sri Lanka uses a 10-digit open numbering plan published by the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL). A geographic (landline) number is made of three parts dialled back to back:

  1. The national trunk prefix 0, dialled before any domestic call.
  2. A 2-digit area code (AA) that identifies the region — 11 for Colombo, 81 for Kandy, 91 for Galle.
  3. A 7-digit subscriber number (nnnnnnn) assigned by the exchange.

Put together, a domestic number is 0 AA nnnnnnn — exactly 10 digits, for example 081 234 5678. To convert to international form the finder follows ITU-T Recommendation E.164: drop the national trunk 0, prepend the country code +94, and keep the remaining 9-digit national significant number. So 081 234 5678 becomes +94 81 234 5678 and, compacted to E.164, +94812345678.

When you type letters, the tool runs a place-to-code lookup across a curated table of city names, districts, nearby towns, and common spelling variants, with a small fuzzy tolerance so galla still finds Galle. When you type digits, it strips spaces, hyphens, brackets, and any +94, 0094, or trunk 0, then reads the first two digits of the national number as the area code. Numbers in the 07Xrange are recognised as mobile — which, under Sri Lanka's number portability, map to no fixed region — and short codes such as 1919 are flagged as out of scope. This is a pure table lookup and string transformation: no estimates, and no data leaves your browser.

Each geographic code in the table is reconciled against the TRCSL numbering plan and the Sri Lanka Telecom regional dialling directory. Where a code could not be confirmed against both, it was omitted rather than guessed.

Worked examples

Place lookup — Colombo

Colombo

  1. Query is letters → place-to-code lookup.
  2. Match: Colombo → area code 11.
  3. Domestic dial code: 0 + 11 = 011.
  4. International code: +94 11.
  5. A sample line 011 234 5678 → +94 11 234 5678 → E.164 +94112345678.
  6. Digit check: 0 (1) + 11 (2) + 2345678 (7) = 10 national digits. ✓

Reverse number lookup — Ratnapura freelancer

045 222 3344

  1. Query is digits → number lookup.
  2. Strip trunk 0 → national number 45 222 3344 (9 digits).
  3. First two digits 45 → Ratnapura (Sabaragamuwa Province).
  4. Local: 045 222 3344.
  5. International: +94 45 222 3344 → E.164 +94452223344.
  6. This is the form to put on an Upwork or invoice contact field. ✓

Edge case — mobile number rejected

077 123 4567

  1. Strip trunk 0 → national number 771234567.
  2. First digit is 7 → this is the 07X mobile range.
  3. Mobile numbers aren't tied to a region, so no district is invented.
  4. Because of number portability, the 07X prefix no longer names the operator either.
  5. Result: “This is a mobile number, not a landline area code.” ✓
