How it works

Wise (formerly TransferWise) prices transfers differently from a bank. A bank usually hides its profit inside a marked-up exchange rate; Wise instead converts at the mid-market rate — the real interbank midpoint you see on Google — and charges a transparent fee up front. This calculator models that fee for a transfer landing in a Sri Lankan rupee (LKR) bank account.

For a send amount A in currency C paid by method m, the fee has three parts and the conversion follows:

  1. Fixed fee — a small flat charge per currency (about USD 0.61, GBP 0.23, EUR 0.28). Source: Wise pricing page.
  2. Variable fee= percentage × A, where the percentage is Wise's published rate for that currency route to LKR (USD ≈ 0.63%, GBP ≈ 0.45%, EUR ≈ 0.50%).
  3. Payment-method surcharge = surcharge × A. Bank transfer/ACH is the baseline at 0%; a debit card adds about 1.5% and a credit card about 2.5%, because Wise passes card-processing costs through.
  4. Total fee = fixed + variable + surcharge, all in the source currency.
  5. Converted amount = A − total fee. Wise deducts the fee before converting.
  6. LKR received = converted amount × mid-market rate. Wise applies no markup to this rate — that is the whole point, and the key reason it beats a bank SWIFT wire.

The tool cross-checks every result two ways — the step-by-step itemisation above and a single combined formula A − (F + (v + p) × A) — and both agree to the cent. Because Wise updates fees periodically, the constants carry a last-verified date and the calculator links to Wise's live tool so you can confirm before sending. The exchange rate is a field you control, so the math stays exact even as the live rate moves.

Worked examples

USD 1,000 by bank transfer (rate Rs 302/USD)

  1. Fixed fee: USD 0.61
  2. Variable fee: 0.63% × 1,000 = USD 6.30
  3. Card surcharge: 0% (bank transfer) = USD 0.00
  4. Total fee: USD 6.91 → effective 0.69%
  5. Converted: 1,000 − 6.91 = USD 993.09
  6. LKR received: 993.09 × 302 = Rs 299,913.18

GBP 500 by debit card (rate Rs 388/GBP)

  1. Fixed fee: GBP 0.23
  2. Variable fee: 0.45% × 500 = GBP 2.25
  3. Debit-card surcharge: 1.5% × 500 = GBP 7.50
  4. Total fee: GBP 9.98 → effective 2.00%
  5. Converted: 500 − 9.98 = GBP 490.02
  6. LKR received: 490.02 × 388 = Rs 190,127.76

Edge case — USD 0.50 by credit card (rate Rs 302/USD)

  1. Fixed fee: USD 0.61 — already larger than the USD 0.50 sent
  2. Raw fee: 0.61 + 0.63%×0.5 + 2.5%×0.5 = USD 0.626
  3. Fee exceeds the amount, so it is capped at USD 0.50
  4. Converted: USD 0.00 → LKR received: Rs 0
  5. Takeaway: Wise is not economical for tiny transfers — send more or batch them.
