Zonal Education Offices in Sri Lanka — All 100, by Town

State school administration in Sri Lanka has four levels. The Ministry of Education sits at the top. Under it are the 9 provincial departments of education, one per province, created by the 13th Amendment. Under those are the 100 zonal education offices, each headed by a zonal director. Under the zones are 312 divisional (koralē) education offices, and under those, the schools. A zone is an education-specific unit: it is not a district, not a divisional secretariat division and not a local-authority area, and its boundary can cut across DS boundaries. That is the confusion this page exists to end — the Ministry circular tells you to write to “the relevant zonal education office” and never says which one that is.

This is a directory, not a calculator, so its accuracy is entirely a question of whether the Ministry’s lists were transcribed correctly. That procedure is therefore the methodology.

1. Take the roster from the school lists, not from a summary. The Ministry’s Data Management Branch publishes ten school lists for 2024 — one of national schools and one per province — and every row carries three columns this tool needs: District, Zone and Education Division. Reading all 10,076 rows and taking the distinct values gives 100 zones and 312 divisional offices, with the district each sits in. Because the roster is derived from the schools rather than typed from a contact page, a zone cannot be missing unless every school in it is.
2. Keep the Ministry’s codes and spellings. Province and district come with their official numeric prefixes — 1.Western, 11.Colombo— and the code is kept, so a district is identified by a number rather than by a spelling, and this dataset joins cleanly to the national-school list. Zone names keep the Ministry’s spelling (Waththegama, Thenmaradchi, Moneragala); the variants people actually type are held in a separate alias list instead of being corrected into the roster.
3. Match on prefixes, and say what matched.A query is lower-cased, stripped of punctuation and split into words. A zone comes back when every word is the start of a word in its zone name, its district, one of its divisional offices, or one of its aliases. The results are ranked in that order — exact zone name first, then zone-name prefix, then divisional office, then district, then alias — and each card says which one matched. That last part matters: a search for “Moratuwa” returning the Piliyandala zone is only trustworthy if the page tells you Moratuwa is a divisional office inside it.
4. No fuzzy matching. There is deliberately no edit-distance tier. On Sri Lankan place names it produces confidently wrong answers, and sending someone to the wrong government office is worse than returning nothing. Where a query misses, the tool names the closest zone spellings as a hint rather than presenting one as the answer.
5. Publish only what the Ministry publishes.Telephone numbers and mailboxes come from the Ministry’s NEMIS office directory, filtered by a mechanical rule: a fixed line (a ten-digit number that is not an 07x mobile) and an address on a .gov.lk domain. 69 of the 100 zones clear that bar. The rest render with no contact block and a pointer to their provincial department, rather than with a number found somewhere else. No officer names appear anywhere.
6. Check the totals against a different Ministry table. Table 2.6 of the same statistics release, “Government School System at a Glance”, is compiled from district returns rather than from the per-school lists. Summing every zone in a district back up therefore travels a completely different path to the same figure. All 25 districts agree, and so does the national total: 9,680 provincial + 396 national = 10,076 government schools.

Two things are deliberately out of scope. There is no school-name lookup yet: that needs the full school census keyed by name, and a wrong answer sends someone to the wrong office. And there are no zone boundaries on a map, because boundary geodata is not published — drawing an approximate one would invent the exact thing you came here to check.

Every figure below is recomputed from the 100 zone records each time this page renders and compared with the totals frozen when the Ministry lists were transcribed. 25 of 25district totals reconcile against the Ministry’s separate district table.

Counted from the roster at render time, never written into the copy. The zone counts in the province rows are the sums of the district rows beneath them, and the nine province totals sum to 100.
