Sri Lanka National College of Education (NCoE / Vidyapeeta) Eligibility Checker

Everything the checker knows comes from one document: the Gazette of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, Part I : Sec. (IIA), 07.11.2025, the Ministry of Education's notice calling for student teachers to follow the three-year pre-service National Diploma in Teaching on 2023 or 2024A/L results. Each rule below carries that gazette's own clause number, so you can look up any verdict rather than take it on trust.

The age bar is a date, not an age

Clause 2.3.1 says an applicant should be “not more than 25 years of age as on 01.01.2025”. That date is printed in the gazette; it is not the intake year, and this is where most online summaries go wrong. The checker counts completed years from your date of birth to that date — the birthday has to have arrived by then — and also derives the boundary the other way round, as cut-off − (25 + 1) years + 1 day, which gives January 2, 1999. Clergy are read against 30 years under clause 2.3.2, moving the boundary to January 2, 1994, and may apply only for their own religion's course.

The two examination gates

Clause 3.2 asks for three main-subject passes at one sitting in an eligible A/L year. Clause 3.3.1 sets the O/L baseline: 6 subjects passed including the medium language and Mathematics, with 3 credit passes; and where two attempts were used, the first attempt must itself carry 5 subjects including the medium language with 3 credits. Clause 3.4 then allows the course-specific O/L results to span up to three sittings. A note under clause 3.3.1 adds that applicants for Sinhala- and Tamil-medium courses must have sat the A/L in that medium, and clause 3.6.1 sets the English requirement for English-medium courses.

Course matching

Clause 4.0 then states a separate qualification for every course — 21 in Sinhala medium, 21 in Tamil and 7in English. Some are simple (Science asks for Physics, Chemistry and Biology at one sitting in the Biology stream, plus O/L credits in Mathematics and Science). Some have several routes (the ICT course has five, and English Language & Literature three). The checker tests each course's rules against your entries independently and reports every unmet rule at once, rather than stopping at the first, so one pass through the form tells you everything you would have to change. Courses closed by your religion, your clergy status or your A/L medium are named as such.

What it will not tell you

Eligibility is not selection. Under clause 6.1.1.1 half the vacancies are filled on national basis and half district by district, in Z-score order — or on practical-test marks for the aesthetic courses and on sports marks for Health & Physical Education. The Ministry publishes no Z-score cut-off for NCoE intakes, so the checker reports who may apply and shows the vacancy counts the gazette does publish (tables 14.1 to 14.7) instead of guessing at a cut-off. Two self-checks run on every page load: one re-derives the age rule by two independent formulas over several thousand dates, the other re-adds every vacancy row against the totals the gazette prints.

The gazette states the age bar against its own fixed date, so it is cleaner to read as a date of birth. For the 07.11.2025 notice, with the bar read as at January 1, 2025:

A date of birth one day earlier than the figure shown fails. Each next gazette restates its own cut-off date, so check it rather than assuming this one carries over.
