SLIATE HND Entry Requirements & Course Finder — ATI Admissions 2026

SLIATE publishes its admission rules in two documents each year: a gazette notice signed by the Director General, whose Section “A” lists the entry qualification for each Higher National Diploma and whose Section “B” lists which of the 19 Advanced Technological Institutes runs which programme, and a longer admission guideline that adds the selection policy and the marking schemes. Every rule, duration, fee and phone number on this page is transcribed from those two documents for the 2026 intake. Nothing is inferred.

The checker evaluates three layers in order, and reports the first thing that stops you rather than a wall of failures.

1. The common gate (guideline §1.1). You must pass all three main A/L subjects at one sitting, and hold an ordinary pass in O/L English and O/L Mathematics. A/L General English is explicitly excluded from the three main subjects. The O/L requirement, unlike the A/L one, may be met across sittings. When this gate fails, all 15 programmes fail with it, so the page says so once.
2. The programme rule (gazette Section A). Most programmes add a stream: Commerce for HNDBA and HNDBF, Physical Science with Chemistry, Physics and Combined Mathematics for the five engineering-group programmes, Bio Science or Physical Science for HNDFT. Two add a named-subject test — HNDA needs Accounting among your three A/L subjects, and HNDT (Agriculture) needs Biology and Chemistry with either Physics or Agriculture. HNDIT, HNDM, HNDPM and HNDTHM accept any stream. The HND in English is the only programme with a grade rule: a credit in O/L English, or an ordinary pass in Appreciation of English Literary Text, either way alongside an ordinary pass in Mathematics.
3. Delivery (gazette Section B). A paper qualification is worth nothing if no ATI runs the programme in the mode you want. Part-time intakes exist for only three programmes — HNDA, HND in English and HNDIT — and all three require you to be employed in the relevant field and to produce documents at the interview.

Eligibility is not selection. Where an ATI receives more applications than seats, SLIATE ranks qualified applicants two different ways. Category I programmes are ranked on the A/L Z-score, which this tool does not attempt to predict because SLIATE does not publish per-ATI cut-offs. Category II programmes are ranked on a published table worth exactly 100 marks, and that table this tool can compute. The general shape is mark = w × CGT + Σ band(grade), where CGT is your A/L Common General Test mark out of 100 and w is 0.4 for HNDIT and HNDM, 0.3 for HNDPM and 0.6 for HNDTHM. The HND in English scheme uses no Common General Test component at all — it is built entirely from four English-related grades.

The near-miss panel re-runs the whole engine against single realistic changes to your profile — an O/L Mathematics re-sit, an O/L English credit, sitting the Literary Text paper, taking the A/L again in one sitting — and reports which one change opens the most programmes. That is the question the scanned PDF cannot answer.

The first five re-add each published marking-scheme table from its stated row maxima and confirm every row's best band equals that maximum — the same idea as re-deriving a tax figure from a second official formula. The last compares Section A against Section B in both directions, so a mistyped programme code on either side breaks the check instead of quietly hiding a programme.

The full published matrix, all 15 programmes. Medium of instruction is English throughout, full-time study is free of charge, and full-time students must complete at least 6 months of in-plant training.

These five tables decide who gets a seat when a programme is oversubscribed. Every one totals exactly 100 marks. The checker above applies them to your own grades.

• Closing date (2026 intake): August 3, 2026. Late applications are not entertained.
• Where: online only, at apply.sliate.ac.lk. No other route is accepted.
• Fee: Rs 1,000, paid through GovPay in your bank app, covering up to 10 ATI-and-programme choices across both categories. The transaction reference goes into the online form, and a signed printout plus the receipt goes by registered post to your first-preference ATI.
• At registration: originals and certified copies of your educational and other required documents at the selected ATI.
• Selection order: nearest-ATI preference is encouraged, academic merit is the Z-score or the marking-scheme total, and priority goes to applicants below 23 at the closing date.
• Minimum class size: at least 50 registrations are needed to start a programme at an ATI; short cohorts are moved to the nearest ATI running the same programme.

HNDIT has the widest reach of any programme in the 2026 rosters — 18 of the 19ATIs run it full-time. Requirements change with each year's gazette — confirm yours on sliate.ac.lk before you rely on any of this.

Two figures the proposal for this tool expected are deliberately absent because neither document states them: a “six O/L passes including three credits” baseline, and an NVQ level for the HND award.
