Sri Lanka Nursing Training Qualifications — Eligibility Checker

The Ministry of Health & Mass Media recruits student nurses under the Sri Lanka Nursing Service Minute published in Gazette Extraordinary No. 1837/8 of 2013-11-19, and issues a fresh recruitment notice for each intake. The current one is Gazette No. 2489 of 29.05.2026, signed by the Secretary on 2026-05-26, with applications open from 2026-05-29 to 2026-06-30. This checker encodes that notice and nothing else — there is no scoring, no ranking and no estimate of your chances anywhere in it.

Criteria are per cycle, which is the single thing most summaries get wrong. The 2023 intake measured age on the closing date and accepted two A/L batch years; the 2026 intake measures age on the openingdate and accepts four. So the tool asks you to choose a cycle first, and every constant it then applies — the age band, the reference date, the batch years, the height bar, the sittings limit — is read from that cycle's own record.

The gates, in order

1. Citizenship.Clause 4.1: “Should be a Sri Lankan citizen.” There is no alternative route.
2. Marital status. Clause 5.5 disqualifies a registered marriage and a divorce; clause 10.6 requires you to be unmarried when applications open and to stay unmarried through training. A sworn declaration before a Justice of the Peace is checked at interview.
3. Age. 18–28 completed years on 2026-05-29. The tool decides this twice by independent methods — once by building the qualifying date-of-birth window 1997-05-30 → 2008-05-29 backwards from the reference date, and once by counting completed years forwards from your date of birth — and reports whether the two agree, so a date-handling bug shows up as a disagreement rather than as a wrong verdict.
4. A/L batch year. One of 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024 for this cycle. Because the accepted block moves forward each gazette, a batch that is newerthan the list will very likely be picked up later, while a batch already below the list never returns — the tool separates those two cases instead of lumping them together as “not eligible”.
5. Stream and three passes at one sitting. Three passes, grade S or better, drawn from Biology, Chemistry, Agriculture, Physics, Mathematics for Biological Science, or from Combined Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, Higher Mathematics for Physical Science — all at one and the same sitting. The Common General Test and General English are excluded by the same clause and cannot be one of the three. Passes accumulated across two A/L years do not satisfy it.
6. O/L subjects, credits and sittings. 6 subject passes, with credit passes — grade C or better — in Sinhala Language / Tamil Language, Mathematics, Science, English, in not more than 2 sittings. Grade S is an ordinary pass and fails the credit test.
7. Height. At least 147.3 cm. The notice prints the bar twice, as 4 ft 10 in and as 147.3 cm, and converting the imperial figure exactly gives 147.32 cm. The checker converts any feet-and-inches entry to centimetres before comparing, so an applicant who is exactly 4 ft 10 in is never failed by a rounding step at the boundary.
8. No competing government registration. Clauses 5.1–5.3 exclude anyone currently registered on a UGC state university course, a National College of Education course, or another full-time government course recruited on A/L qualifications. Clause 5.4 adds that cancelling that registration after the gazette was published does not restore eligibility.

District residence is treated separately, as a note rather than a gate. Clause 4.3 asks for 3 continuous years of residence in the district you apply from, proved by a Grama Niladhari certificate — but where that cannot be proved, the interview board assigns the district you lived in longest. It decides which quota you compete in, not whether you may apply, so failing it never turns the verdict red.

Medical fitness is not asked about anywhere. Clause 11.4 puts it before a medical board in the first month of training, after selection, so a web page has no business guessing at it.

Selection among eligible applicants is also out of scope, deliberately. Clauses 3.2 to 3.5 divide the island total across districts by population, then across the accepted A/L years and the two streams in proportion to qualified applicants, then 95% female and 5% male — and inside each of those groups applicants are called in Z-score order. The Ministry publishes no cut-off for any of those groups, so inventing one would be guesswork dressed as a calculation.

   Priority list drawn up by Z-score

   The island total is split across districts by population, then across the 4 accepted A/L years and the two streams in proportion to qualified applicants, then 5% male and 95% female. Inside each of those groups the highest Z-scores are called first.

   Interview and document check

   Only applicants on the priority list are called. Originals of the A/L and O/L result sheets, birth certificate, NIC, payment receipt, Grama Niladhari residence certificate, school leaving certificate and a sworn declaration of unmarried status are checked at the interview.

   3 years' full-time training in English

   Conducted at government Nurses' Training Schools, with a monthly allowance paid under Public Administration Circular 10/2025 VI. A medical board confirms fitness in the first month.

   Grade III Nursing Officer, subject to vacancies

   Appointment is against vacancies existing on the day training ends, ranked by final examination merit, and carries a bond to serve anywhere in Sri Lanka for at least 10 years.

The 2026 notice was read in full in Sinhala before any of this page was written, because clause 11.8 makes the Sinhala text the operative one where the three language versions differ. The English wording quoted throughout is taken from the identically structured English notice of the 2023 intake and reconciled line by line against the Sinhala 2026 text. Criteria were last verified on 2026-09-22. They are re-checked whenever a new recruitment notice is gazetted. The place count for the 2026 cycle, 3,000, comes from the Ministry's own announcement of the intake; the notice itself leaves the number to the Secretary, based on training school capacity.
