How it works

Suraksha is a free student insurance scheme funded by the Ministry of Education and underwritten by Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation (SLIC). Every child aged 521 (from age 4 for special-needs students) in a government school, government-approved private school, Pirivena or special-needs school is covered automatically — no enrolment, no premium paid by the family. Because every benefit is a fixed published cap, the amount you can claim is a lookup, not an estimate. This calculator applies the caps deterministically:

  1. Government hospitalisation. min(days × Rs 1,000, Rs 300,000) — a daily cash benefit of Rs 1,000, ceilinged by the annual hospitalisation cap of Rs 300,000.
  2. Private hospitalisation. The room charge is reimbursed up to Rs 12,500/day, then the same annual ceiling applies: min(days × min(room, Rs 12,500), Rs 300,000).
  3. Special OPD. min(expense, Rs 20,000) per policy year.
  4. Critical illness / surgery. min(bill, Rs 1,500,000) per policy year.
  5. Personal accident / disability. A fixed schedule from the Ministry of Education: Rs 200,000 for total permanent disability, Rs 150,000 for partial permanent disability, and Rs 25,000Rs 100,000 for temporary incapacity (assessed within the band). Base accident cover is Rs 200,000.
  6. Parent / guardian death. Rs 75,000 per deceased parent, paid only for students from families earning under Rs 180,000 a year or receiving Aswesuma: Rs 75,000 × parents when the income rule is met, otherwise not eligible under this line.

Each hospitalisation payout is cross-checked with an independent day-by-day accumulator (tallying the daily benefit and clamping at the annual cap, the way an assessor totals a Bed Head Ticket) so the closed-form and step-by-step methods always agree to the rupee. The tool never adjudicates a disputed claim — it shows the schedule amount and the paperwork you file through the school.

Worked examples

Government hospital, 20 days

Payout Rs 20,000

  1. Daily benefit: Rs 1,000/day (government hospital)
  2. Gross: 20 × Rs 1,000 = Rs 20,000
  3. Annual cap: Rs 300,000 — not reached
  4. min(Rs 20,000, Rs 300,000) = Rs 20,000 → within limit

Private hospital, 30 days at Rs 15,000/day (edge case)

Payout Rs 300,000

  1. Room Rs 15,000/day exceeds the Rs 12,500/day limit → reimburse Rs 12,500/day
  2. Gross: 30 × Rs 12,500 = Rs 375,000
  3. Annual cap: Rs 300,000 binds
  4. min(Rs 375,000, Rs 300,000) = Rs 300,000 → capped at the maximum

Parent death, 2 parents, Aswesuma family

Payout Rs 150,000

  1. Family receives Aswesuma → income rule met
  2. Per parent: Rs 75,000
  3. Rs 75,000 × 2 = Rs 150,000
  4. A non-low-income family would not be eligible under this benefit line.
