Sri Lanka Vehicle Emission Test Standards Checker

This is a lookup-and-compare tool, not an estimator. Sri Lanka's mandatory Vehicle Emission Test (VET) measures what actually comes out of your tailpipe on a gas analyser (petrol) or smoke meter (diesel). Your certificate prints those readings. This page holds the legal maximums and tells you whether each reading is inside the limit and by how much.

All limits come from Gazette Extraordinary No. 1887/20, 05 November 2014, the national emission standard, restated by the authorised operators. There are three category limits:

• Petrol — motorcycle / motor-tricycle: CO ≤ 4.0 %v/v, HC ≤ 6000 ppm
• Petrol — car / van / SUV / lorry: CO ≤ 3.0 %v/v, HC ≤ 1000 ppm
• Diesel — all vehicles: smoke K ≤ 4.0 m⁻¹

The verdict logic is a simple threshold comparison, evaluated only for the pollutants you enter:

1. For each entered reading, pass = measured ≤ limit. The limit is inclusive — a reading exactly on the limit passes.
2. The margin is limit − measured: a positive number is your headroom under the limit; a negative number is how far over you are.
3. The overall verdict is PASS only if every entered pollutant is within its limit; if any single pollutant exceeds its limit, the overall result is FAIL.

Petrol CO and HC are read at two conditions — engine idle and roughly 2,500 RPM with no load — and the vehicle must be within limits at both. Diesel uses the snap-acceleration smoke opacity expressed as the light-absorption coefficient K (m⁻¹). The tool cross-checks its own verdict two independent ways — a per-pollutant boolean AND and a failing-count reduction — so the PASS / FAIL label is never inconsistent with the individual tiles. These limits are the current 2014 gazette values; older superseded thresholds are deliberately not used to avoid confusion.
