  • Kuda Gal Amuna is billed for its minimum occupancy of 6. A smaller party pays the same group lodging fee, so the per-person figure below is what your 2 people actually pay.
  • Regulation 4(11): every charge above is subject to taxes imposed by the Government from time to time. The figure with VAT is shown separately.

Sources cited: every rate comes from Extraordinary Gazette 2292/11 of 8 August 2022 (Schedules II, III, IV, V and VII under the Fauna and Flora Protection Ordinance). Bungalow names, codes and occupancy come from the DWC reservation eService, and the permit offices from the DWC notice of 4 October 2024. All were re-read on 2026-10-16. This tool does not book anything and is not the Department of Wildlife Conservation.

How it works

Every figure comes from one document: Extraordinary Gazette 2292/11 of 8 August 2022, the regulations the Minister of Wildlife and Forest Resources Conservation made under Section 71 of the Fauna and Flora Protection Ordinance (Chapter 469). It replaced the 2009 regulations and has applied since 2 September 2022. The calculator walks its schedules in order.

  1. Resolve the bungalow to a fee category. Schedule III names the bungalows in Categories I to VI, with Category V as a catch-all for anything unnamed. The eService spells several of them differently from the gazette (Kadurupitiya for Kandurupitiya, Kirigal Ebe for Kirigalbe, Ramba Wila for Rambawila, Pokunutenna for Pokunuthanna), so the mapping is written out one line per bungalow rather than matched by similarity. All 28 facilities in this tool resolve to a name Schedule III actually prints, and none lands in the catch-all by accident.
  2. Lodging (Schedule IV). A Sri Lankan group pays one flat fee that covers ten people: Rs 4,000 a night at Category VI up to Rs 15,000 at Category I, doubling for two nights and trebling for three. A foreign tourist instead pays USD 15 per head per night, the same in every category.
  3. Linen and excess people. Linen is Rs 2,500 for the whole local group (Rs 6,250 at the Category II dormitories) and Rs 250 per foreign tourist, charged once for the stay rather than per night. Each local tourist beyond the group of ten adds Rs 1,000 for one night, Rs 2,000 for two, Rs 3,000 for three, plus Rs 250 linen.
  4. Park entry (Schedule II), charged separately at the gate. The tool uses the Overnight Stay column, not the daytime one. Schedule I sorts the reserves into three categories, and only Category I has a tourist season premium: Rs 300 per local adult in the season against Rs 240 in the regular period, USD 50 against USD 40 for a foreign adult. A permit is valid for a single entry under regulation 4(3), so entry is charged once for the stay, not once per night.
  5. Service charge and vehicle. An overnight stay in a circuit bungalow costs a local tour group Rs 1,000, while foreign tourists are charged USD 15 each, in the gazette's own words “per each person separately”. A camp ground is Rs 500 per local group and USD 12 per foreign group. Schedule V then charges the vehicle entering the reserve: Rs 150 for a car or boat, Rs 300 for a jeep, van or double cab, Rs 500 for a bus or lorry.

Schedule IV never says what a party of both Sri Lankans and foreigners pays. This tool charges the local group fee once and the per-head foreign fee for each foreign visitor, for lodging, linen and the service charge alike, which is the reading the park offices apply. The excess person fee is counted on local tourists only, because foreign tourists are already billed per head and counting them twice would overcharge. SAARC nationals are foreign tourists for lodging but get the SAARC rate at the gate, since Schedule IV knows only local and foreign while Schedule II prices all three.

Two limits are worth knowing before you plan. Regulation 4(6) caps a reservation at 3 consecutive nights, and the eService only opens bookings for the current and the following month. The occupancy the eService publishes is also a hard stop: the gazette will happily price a party of fourteen at a bungalow that sleeps ten, but the booking will not go through, so the calculator prices it and warns you in the same breath. Finally, regulation 4(11) subjects every charge above to taxes imposed by the Government from time to time, which is why the gazetted total and the total with VAT are both on screen.

Worked examples

Sri Lankan family of six, one night at Kuda Gal Amuna (Yala)

Own car, regular period. Category VI bungalow, Category I reserve.

  1. Lodging, Category VI, 1 night, local group of up to 10: Rs 4,000
  2. Linen, local group, charged once: Rs 2,500
  3. Excess person fee: none, 6 people is within the group of 10
  4. Park entry, Category I reserve, regular overnight rate:
  5. 4 adults x Rs 240 = Rs 960
  6. 2 children x Rs 160 = Rs 320
  7. Service charge, overnight in a bungalow, local group: Rs 1,000
  8. Vehicle, car: Rs 150
  9. Total: Rs 8,930 before regulation 4(11) taxes

Rs 8,930

Two foreign adults, two nights at Ginihiriya (Horton Plains)

Hired van, tourist season, USD at Rs 305. Category I bungalow, Category I reserve.

  1. Lodging, 2 foreign tourists x USD 30 for 2 nights = USD 60
  2. Park entry, Category I reserve, tourist season overnight: 2 x USD 50 = USD 100
  3. Service charge, foreign, per person: 2 x USD 15 = USD 30
  4. Dollar legs: USD 190 x Rs 305 = Rs 57,950
  5. Linen, foreign: 2 x Rs 250 = Rs 500
  6. Vehicle, van: Rs 300
  7. Total: Rs 58,750 before regulation 4(11) taxes

Rs 58,750

Edge case: 14 students at Kokmote (Wilpattu), which sleeps 10

One bus, regular period, one night. Category IV bungalow, Category I reserve.

  1. Lodging, Category IV, 1 night, group of up to 10: Rs 6,000
  2. Excess tourists: 14 - 10 = 4, at Rs 1,000 each = Rs 4,000
  3. Linen: Rs 2,500 for the group + 4 x Rs 250 = Rs 3,500
  4. Park entry, student overnight rate: 14 x Rs 40 = Rs 560
  5. Service charge, local group: Rs 1,000
  6. Vehicle, bus: Rs 500
  7. Total: Rs 15,560, but the party exceeds the published maximum of 10,
  8. so the eService will refuse the booking. Split it across two bungalows.
