To be awarded the NSE 7 in Security Operations certification you must hold the NSE 4 FortiOS certification and either an NSE 5 Security Operations or an NSE 6 Security Operations certification, and pass this exam within 2 years of the last prerequisite exam. Fortinet's recommended experience is notably lighter than for the other NSE 7 exams: 1 year of network security experience and 6 months working in a security operations centre.

If the code does not work

Fortinet states that achieving it recertifies your NSE 1, NSE 2, NSE 3, NSE 4, NSE 5 Security Operations and NSE 6 Security Operations certifications if they are still active. An NSE 7 certification is also one of the three prerequisites for NSE 8, alongside NSE 4 FortiOS and an NSE 5 or NSE 6 certification in the same track. This is the Fortinet credential aimed squarely at people working inside a security operations centre, whether in-house or at a managed security provider — and in Sri Lanka that is a growing but still small pool, which is part of why the credential carries weight locally. It is also the most accessible NSE 7 on paper: Fortinet asks for 6 months of SOC experience and a year of network security, where the Secure Networking Architect exam expects 3 years of networking, 3 years of network security and 2 years each with FortiGate, FortiManager and FortiAnalyzer. Two practical points for a candidate here. From 21 September 2026 it can no longer be sat from home over OnVUE, so a Pearson VUE test centre booking is needed. And Fortinet's US$200 fee excluding tax rises to US$400 on 2 November 2026, which makes sitting it before that date worth planning for. How long is the exam and how many questions?
75 minutes and 35 to 40 questions, in English only, tested against FortiSOAR 7.6 and FortiSIEM 7.3.
How much SOC experience does Fortinet expect?
Less than for any other NSE 7 exam: 1 year of network security experience and 6 months working in a security operations centre. For comparison, the Secure Networking Architect exam assumes 3 years of networking, 3 years of network security and 2 years each with FortiGate, FortiManager and FortiAnalyzer. None of this is enforced at registration — it is Fortinet's guidance on readiness.
Do I need to know how to write playbooks?
Yes, in detail. SOAR playbook development is one of four exam domains and covers playbook and connector configuration, manipulating data with Jinja filters, and troubleshooting. Reading playbooks is not enough — the exam expects you to reason about why one fails.
Can I sit it online from home?
Only until 20 September 2026. Fortinet withdraws OnVUE remote proctoring for all NSE 7 exams effective 21 September 2026, after which it must be sat at a Pearson VUE test centre. Pearson VUE said it would contact candidates with NSE 7 OnVUE exams scheduled from that date onward about rescheduling. NSE 4 to NSE 6 exams keep both options.
Is the fee changing?
Yes. Fortinet raises NSE 7 exam fees from US$200 to US$400 excluding tax on 2 November 2026. NSE 4 to NSE 6 exams stay at US$200. NSE 7 recertification assessments and the new industry certification exams also move to US$400, while NSE 8 practical exams stay at US$800.
What do I need before the certification is awarded?
The NSE 4 FortiOS certification and either an NSE 5 Security Operations or an NSE 6 Security Operations certification, with this exam passed within 2 years of the last prerequisite exam. The NSE 6 Security Operations electives are FortiSIEM Analyst, FortiNDR Cloud Analyst, FortiSOAR Analyst, FortiRecon Analyst and FortiDeceptor Administrator. The certification then runs 2 years from the NSE 7 exam or the last prerequisite exam, whichever is later.
