How long it stays valid
12 months from purchase. Book and sit the exam before it expires, a code that has simply run out of time cannot be replaced, so do not buy months ahead of when you plan to use it.
How you redeem it
Book the exam with Pearson VUE as normal, then enter this code at the payment step instead of paying the fee. You choose the date, and whether you sit it at a test centre or from home with OnVUE proctoring.
If the code does not work
If the vendor rejects it when you try to redeem it, tell us straight away and we replace it or refund you in full. Contact us before the voucher’s own expiry date.
If you do not pass
A voucher covers one attempt. A retake needs a new voucher, and the vendor, not us, sets how long you must wait before sitting the exam again. Check the vendor’s retake policy before you book.
Changing your mind
Full refund for any reason as long as we have not yet sent the code, including if you realise you have ordered the wrong exam, which is easy to do when codes look alike. DP-900 is an entry credential rather than a hiring qualification on its own. Its practical value is that it never expires, it sits in the cheapest Microsoft price band, and it is a low-risk way to prove you can pass a proctored Microsoft exam before committing to DP-300, DP-600 or DP-700. Microsoft is explicit that it is not a prerequisite for any of them.

DP-900 is the most accessible Microsoft data exam to buy: 45 minutes rather than 100, and in the fundamentals price band. Pearson VUE's published Microsoft price list puts Sri Lanka at 44 USD for a fundamentals exam commercially and 31 USD academically, against 99 USD and 69 USD for the same exam proctored in the United States. Microsoft delivers exams at a test centre or online to your home or office under OnVUE proctoring, and notes online exams are available in most but not all countries and regions, so confirm availability with Pearson VUE when you book. One thing to plan for: Microsoft Learn is not available during fundamentals exams, unlike associate and expert ones.

How long is DP-900 and how many questions will I get?
45 minutes of exam time, and Microsoft's duration table lists 65 minutes of seat time for a fundamentals exam, which allows for instructions and the candidate agreement. Microsoft does not publish a fixed question count for DP-900 and states only that most of its exams typically contain 40 to 60 questions.
What score do I need to pass?
700 out of 1,000 on Microsoft's scaled score. Microsoft notes this may not equal 70% of the points, because the requirement adjusts to the difficulty of the question set you are given.
Does the Azure Data Fundamentals certification expire?
No. Microsoft's renewal page states directly that fundamentals certifications do not expire. The annual renewal requirement applies to associate, expert and specialty certifications, and the DP-900 page has no renewal section at all.
Is DP-900 required before DP-300, DP-600 or DP-700?
No. Microsoft states that Azure Data Fundamentals can be used to prepare for other Azure role-based certifications like Azure Database Administrator Associate or Azure Data Engineer Associate, 'but it is not a prerequisite for any of them.'
Can I look things up on Microsoft Learn during the exam?
No. Microsoft allows access to Microsoft Learn during associate and expert role-based exams only, and states that access is not available on fundamentals exams. DP-900 is closed book.
Can students book this differently?
Yes. Microsoft's DP-900 page offers 'Schedule through Certiport if you are a student or an educator' in addition to Pearson VUE, and Pearson VUE's Microsoft price list publishes a lower academic band for Sri Lanka — 31 USD versus 44 USD commercial.
If I fail, when can I retake it?
The same rules as role-based exams: 24 hours before your second attempt, a 14-day waiting period between each attempt after that, and no more than five attempts within 12 months of your first sitting.
