EPF Balance Check Sri Lanka (and ETF)

No balance is looked up here. Answer five questions and this page names the official channel that will actually answer you, prints the exact SMS text, links the right form, lists the documents and shows the dead ends. Sri Lanka's EPF and ETF, not India's EPFO or UAN.

No balance is looked up here. This answers five questions and prints the exact channel, message and document list. Nothing you type leaves your browser, and you are never asked for a password, a PIN or an NIC number.

Start from a situation
Which fund

EPF is held by the Central Bank. ETF is a separate board with its own channels.

Registered for the fund's online service

Neither fund lets you sign up on the website, so a log-in you have never used probably does not exist.

What you actually need

A figure on a screen and a signed letter come from completely different places.

Decides whose certification a registration form needs, and whether the half-yearly statement can reach you.

Form WR1 can be collected from a District Labour Office, so this routes the pickup.

Used only to build the SMS text on this page. Never your password.

Your answer

The fastest EPF and ETF channel open to you today is epf balance inquiry lines.

Cross-check passed: the SMS text and the document count each agree with a second, independent calculation.

  1. Call 011-2206636 or 011-2206640 during office hours.
  2. Have your EPF member number from your "B" card and your NIC number ready.
  3. You get a figure read out to you, not a document. Nothing arrives in writing.

Twice a year, so up to six months away
  1. Ask the person who handles payroll at your workplace for your EPF statement.
  2. The Department issues these half-yearly under section 5(1)(j) of the EPF Act and members receive them through their employers.

Extra
  1. Call +94-11-7747200 or write to [email protected] and ask the Member Accounts Division what it needs for a written balance confirmation.
  2. The Board publishes claim forms and an e-Services request form, but no balance-letter application form, so there is no form to download for this.
  3. Take or send your NIC and your EPF member number, which is also your ETF reference.

The time on each card is the shape of the channel, not a service standard. Neither fund publishes a processing time for the written routes, so none is claimed here.

Dead ends, and why

EPF member e-Service portalEPF

You are not sure whether you are registered. Neither fund lets you register on the website itself, so assume you are not until a log-in works. EPF registration is Form WR1, certified by your employer and posted in, with the PIN returned by registered post.

Start Form WR1 now if you want the portal later. Meanwhile use the inquiry lines below.

EPF SMS serviceEPF

The SMS service runs off the same registration as the portal, so it is unavailable until the PIN arrives.

Once registered, send HELP EPF to 7778 and the reply lists the commands the service accepts.

You are not sure whether you are registered. Neither fund lets you register on the website itself, so assume you are not until a log-in works. An ETF log-in is created either by your employer or by the Board itself.

Submit the member e-Services request below. The Board e-mails or hands over the log-in at submission, so this route is faster than EPF's postal PIN.

How to open the proper channels

Register for the EPF e-Service with Form WR1

EPF

Weeks. The PIN comes back by registered post.

  1. Collect Form WR1 from a District Labour Office or the EPF counter, or download it.
  2. Have your current employer certify it.
  3. Post it to the Superintendent, Employees' Provident Fund, No. 13, Sir Baron Jayathilaka Mawatha, Colombo 01.
  4. Your password or PIN arrives by registered post. Only then do the portal and the SMS service work.

Ask the ETF Board to create your e-Services log-in

ETF

Days. Log-in details are e-mailed or handed over when you submit.

  1. Fill the "Application for Member Request for ETF e-Services".
  2. Submit it to the Member Accounts Division at 19-23 Floors, "Mehewara Piyesa", P.O. Box 807, Kirula Road, Narahenpita, Colombo 05, or to your nearest ETF regional office.
  3. The Board e-mails the log-in details or hands them over at submission.
  4. Give the mobile number you actually use. Every balance SMS is answered only to that number.
Source

Ask your employer to create your ETF log-in

ETF

Depends on your employer. Nothing for you to post.

  1. Your employer submits the "Application for Employer request for ETF e-Services" to the AGM (Member Accounts) at head office.
  2. With an employer e-Services log-in, your employer creates member accounts for its staff, including yours.

Worth knowing first

  • ETF contributions are remitted under your EPF number, and there is no ETF membership form to fill. One member number serves both funds, but the balances and the channels are entirely separate.

Every channel, phone number, address, form name and SMS pattern above is transcribed from epf.lk and etfb.lk, read on 2026-10-13. Each card links to the page it came from. Full source list below the tool.

How it works

This is a routing tool, not a calculator and not a lookup. Neither the Central Bank's EPF Department nor the Employees' Trust Fund Board exposes member balances to anyone outside the fund, so any page offering to fetch your figure is either asking for your portal credentials or inventing a number. What is genuinely solvable is the part that wastes people a fortnight: working out which of the eleven published channels fits the thing you actually need, before you post a form to the wrong address.

The rule table below runs on your answers. Every rule cites the page it comes from and nothing is inferred.

  1. Two funds, two sets of channels. EPF accounts sit with the EPF Department of the Central Bank; ETF accounts with the ETF Board. ETF contributions are remitted under your EPF number and there is no ETF membership form to fill, so one member number serves both, but the balances and the channels are entirely separate. Choosing both funds runs the whole table twice and merges the answer.
  2. What you need decides everything else. If you need a document a bank or an embassy will accept, the portal and the SMS services are marked informational and the answer becomes the Balance Confirmation Letter route, because a screen is not a signed letter. If you only want to see the number, the fast channels come back into play.
  3. Online access is gated on prior registration. The EPF e-Service at services.epf.lk and its SMS service both require Form WR1, certified by your employer and posted to the Superintendent, EPF, with the password or PIN returned by registered post. So “no” and “not sure” both block the portal today, and Form WR1 is shown as the setup path rather than as an answer.
  4. Not employed is the trap.Form WR1 still needs an employer's certification when you have left the job: your most recent employer, with that employment's details on the form. This is the step people discover after they have already emigrated, so the tool raises it as a warning rather than hiding it in prose.
  5. The letter route has one point of contact. Balance Confirmation Letter and Contribution History Report both go to the EPF statements contact, either by e-mail to [email protected] or over the counter at Whiteaways Building, No. 25, Sir Baron Jayathilaka Mawatha, Colombo 01, on 011-2206690 / 011-2206691 / 011-2206692. The documents are the completed application for that specific report, a clear NIC copy and copies of your “B” card(s), plus the passport bio page where, and only where, the purpose is a visa or a skills assessment. That one conditional line is why the checklist is three items for a bank loan and four for a visa.
  6. With no registration and no letter needed, two channels remain. The half-yearly Statement of Member Accounts, issued twice a year under section 5(1)(j) of the EPF Act and distributed through your employer, and the balance inquiry lines on 011-2206636 and 011-2206640. The statement is no use between jobs, because it reaches members through an employer.
  7. ETF access is quicker to open than EPF access. An ETF member log-in is created either by your employer from an employer e-Services account, or by the Board itself on a Member Request for ETF e-Services form submitted at head office or the nearest regional office, with the log-in details e-mailed or handed over at submission. No postal PIN, so for an unregistered member the ETF route reaches a working log-in first.
  8. SMS text is substituted, never guessed. The published patterns are ETFBLC"log-in user name" and ETFCHK"Lot Reference Number", both to 1919. Your value replaces the words inside the quotes and nothing else changes, and the unfilled pattern is printed beside it so you can see what was substituted. On the EPF side the only published message is HELP EPF to 7778, which replies with the service's own command list, so that reply is the authority.
  9. The sender number is a precondition, not a footnote. The ETF Board answers the mobile number recorded when the account was created, so a newer SIM gets nothing back. That sits on the SMS card itself.

Two independent cross-checks run on every answer. The SMS text is built twice, once by substituting into the published pattern and once from the keyword and your value alone, and the two strings must match. The document checklist is counted twice, once by measuring the generated list and once from the source's own conditions, and the two counts must match. The calculator shows both passing, the same role the IRD's monthly formula plays on the income tax calculator.

Worked examples

Worked example

Gampaha machine operator, left her job, bank wants proof

EPF · official balance letter · bank or finance company · not registered · not employed now · Gampaha

  1. Need is a signed letter, so the portal and the SMS service are marked informational. A bank will not take a screenshot.
  2. Registration is no, so the portal is blocked outright today.
  3. Answer: Balance Confirmation Application (Via E-Mail) to [email protected], or the Over the Counter version at Whiteaways Building.
  4. Checklist: 3 items. Application form, clear NIC copy, copy of the “B” card(s). No passport page, because the purpose is a bank loan and the source conditions that page on a visa or skills assessment.
  5. Warning raised: a later Form WR1 needs her most recent employer's certification, which only gets harder with time.
  6. Listed as extra: the inquiry lines, for an interim figure while the letter is in the post. The half-yearly statement is withheld, because it reaches members through an employer she no longer has.
  7. District Gampaha routes the WR1 pickup to the Gampaha District Labour Office.

Worked example

Migrant worker in Qatar, skills assessment

EPF · official balance letter · visa or skills assessment · not registered · working abroad

  1. Same letter route as above, because the need has not changed.
  2. Checklist: 4 items. The three above plus the passport bio page, the one document the EPF Department makes conditional on purpose.
  3. The counter route stays listed but carries a caveat: hard to use from outside Sri Lanka unless someone can go for you.
  4. The request has to come from his own personal e-mail address. The Department issues these reports only to the member.
  5. Noted: registering for either online service before leaving Sri Lanka would have been an afternoon that saved weeks.

Worked example

Registered ETF member with a claim already filed

ETF · status of a claim I filed · registered · user name etf.kumara99 · Lot Reference ETF/2026/00412

  1. Claim status needs no log-in at all on the ETF side, so the no-login screen at eservices.etfb.lk comes first.
  2. Claim SMS built: ETFCHK“ETF/2026/00412” to 1919.
  3. Balance SMS built from the same answers: ETFBLC“etf.kumara99” to 1919.
  4. Both carry the precondition that the Board answers only the mobile number recorded at account creation.
  5. Both are printed beside the unfilled official pattern, so the substitution is visible rather than taken on trust.

Worked example

Edge case: a user name with a space in it

ETF · status of a claim I filed · registered · user name “etf kumara” · Lot Reference ETF/2026/00412

  1. The user name fails validation before any string is built, with a message that says where to find the right value rather than just “invalid”.
  2. No balance SMS is built from the bad value. The unfilled official pattern is still printed, so the real message shape is never hidden.
  3. The claim SMS still builds, because the Lot Reference Number in the same submission is fine. One bad field does not take the whole answer down.
  4. A user name of exactly 40 characters is accepted; 41 is rejected. The boundary is tested, not assumed.
