It is an entry-level exam, so there is no formal prerequisite — it is a reasonable first certification. Data and AI roles are the fastest-growing technical postings in Colombo, and most of them name a platform credential.

Emailed to the address on your order once we have confirmed the payment, by a person rather than automatically. In practice that is usually the same day and almost always within one working day. How long it stays valid
36 months from purchase. Book and sit the exam before it expires, a code that has simply run out of time cannot be replaced, so do not buy months ahead of when you plan to use it.
How you redeem it
Book the exam with Pearson VUE as normal, then enter this code at the payment step instead of paying the fee. You choose the date, and whether you sit it at a test centre or from home with OnVUE proctoring.
If the code does not work
If the vendor rejects it when you try to redeem it, tell us straight away and we replace it or refund you in full. Contact us before the voucher’s own expiry date.
If you do not pass
A voucher covers one attempt. A retake needs a new voucher, and the vendor, not us, sets how long you must wait before sitting the exam again. Check the vendor’s retake policy before you book.
Changing your mind
Full refund for any reason as long as we have not yet sent the code, including if you realise you have ordered the wrong exam, which is easy to do when codes look alike. AIF-C01 sits in the same 100 USD foundational price tier as CLF-C02 and needs no prerequisite, so it is realistic as a first or second certification. It is not offered in Sinhala or Tamil, so you will sit it in English; if English is not your first language, request the one-off 'ESL +30' accommodation through your AWS Certification account before you register and you get a 30-minute extension on this and all future exams. How long is the AI Practitioner exam and what question types does it use?
90 minutes for 65 questions, of which 50 affect your score and 15 are unscored trial items that 'are not identified on the exam'. Unusually for AWS, the AIF-C01 exam guide lists four question types: multiple choice, multiple response, ordering — where you place 3 to 5 responses in the correct sequence — and matching, where you pair responses against 3 to 7 prompts. For multiple response, ordering and matching the guide states you must get every option, position or pair right to receive credit, so there is no partial credit.
What score do I need to pass AIF-C01?
700 on a scaled range of 100 to 1,000. Scoring is compensatory, so a low section score does not fail you provided your overall scaled score reaches 700. Unanswered questions are scored as incorrect and there is no penalty for guessing, so leave nothing blank.
Do I need the Cloud Practitioner certification first?
No. There is no prerequisite. The exam guide recommends up to 6 months of exposure to AI/ML on AWS and familiarity with Amazon EC2, Amazon S3, AWS Lambda, Amazon Bedrock and Amazon SageMaker AI. The exam page does note that if you already hold Cloud Practitioner or an Associate-level certification you can go straight to the AI foundational training rather than the cloud fundamentals courses.
Does AIF-C01 test whether I can build or train models?
No, and the exam guide is specific. Developing or coding AI/ML models or algorithms, implementing data engineering or feature engineering techniques, performing hyperparameter tuning or model optimisation, building and deploying AI/ML pipelines or infrastructure, conducting mathematical or statistical analysis of models, implementing security or compliance protocols for AI/ML systems, and developing governance frameworks and policies are all listed as out of scope. How is this different from the Generative AI Developer - Professional exam?
They are different tiers. AIF-C01 is foundational: 90 minutes, 65 questions, 700 to pass, 100 USD list, aimed at someone with up to 6 months of exposure. AIP-C01, the Generative AI Developer - Professional, is 180 minutes with 75 questions (65 scored plus 10 unscored), passes at 750, lists at 300 USD, and its exam guide sets the target candidate at '2 or more years of experience building production-grade applications on AWS or with open-source technologies' plus '1 year of hands-on experience implementing GenAI solutions'.
What if I fail the exam?
AWS's after-testing policy states you must wait 14 calendar days before retaking. 'There is no limit on exam attempts', but 'You must pay the full registration fee for each exam attempt', so each attempt needs its own voucher. Once you pass, you cannot retake the same exam for two years.
How long is the certification valid?
Three years from the date earned, the same as every other AWS certification. AWS's before-testing policy confirms that passing an exam grants certification 'active for three years'.
