DEA-C01: AWS Certified Data Engineer - Associate is aimed at analysts, data engineers and developers building on data platforms. It sits at associate level and assumes some hands-on experience with the platform. Data and AI roles are the fastest-growing technical postings in Colombo, and most of them name a platform credential.

When it arrives
Emailed to the address on your order once we have confirmed the payment, by a person rather than automatically. In practice that is usually the same day and almost always within one working day. If sourcing a particular voucher is going to take longer, we tell you rather than leaving the order sitting.
How long it stays valid
12 months from purchase. Book and sit the exam before it expires, a code that has simply run out of time cannot be replaced, so do not buy months ahead of when you plan to use it.
How you redeem it
Book the exam with Pearson VUE as normal, then enter this code at the payment step instead of paying the fee. You choose the date, and whether you sit it at a test centre or from home with OnVUE proctoring.
If the code does not work
If the vendor rejects it when you try to redeem it, tell us straight away and we replace it or refund you in full. Contact us before the voucher’s own expiry date.
If you do not pass
A voucher covers one attempt. A retake needs a new voucher, and the vendor, not us, sets how long you must wait before sitting the exam again. Check the vendor’s retake policy before you book.
Changing your mind
Full refund for any reason as long as we have not yet sent the code, including if you realise you have ordered the wrong exam, which is easy to do when codes look alike. Sitting this exam in Sri Lanka
Pipeline work is delivered remotely for overseas clients as readily as it is on site, which makes data engineering a practical specialism to certify in from Sri Lanka. DEA-C01 sits in the 150 USD Associate price tier and has no prerequisite exam, so you can go straight to it if you already work with ETL and SQL. Among its four languages — English, Japanese, Korean and Simplified Chinese — English is the one relevant here; there is no Sinhala or Tamil version. The one-off 'ESL +30' accommodation adds 30 minutes for non-native English speakers and only needs to be requested once, before you register. How long is DEA-C01 and how many questions are scored?
130 minutes for 65 questions. The exam guide states 50 of them affect your score and the exam 'includes 15 unscored questions that do not affect your score', which 'are not identified on the exam'. Question types are multiple choice and multiple response only — no ordering or matching items.
What is the passing score for the Data Engineer - Associate exam?
720 on a scaled range of 100 to 1,000. It uses compensatory scoring, so you only need to clear 720 overall and there is no per-domain minimum. AWS's after-testing policy states final results are posted to your AWS Certification Account within five business days after the close of the exam.
How much experience does AWS expect before this exam?
Nothing is required, but the exam guide sets the target candidate at the equivalent of 2-3 years of data engineering experience plus at least 1-2 years hands-on with AWS. It also lists recommended general IT knowledge: setup and maintenance of ETL pipelines from ingestion to destination, language-agnostic programming concepts, Git commands for source control, using data lakes, general networking, storage and compute concepts, and general concepts of vectors. That is a heavier profile than the Associate label suggests.
Does the exam cover machine learning?
No. The exam guide explicitly lists 'Perform ML training and inferences' as out of scope for the target candidate, along with programming language-specific syntax and drawing business conclusions from data. If you want the ML side, that is Machine Learning Engineer - Associate instead.
Which domain carries the most weight?
Data Ingestion and Transformation at 34% of scored content, followed by Data Store Management at 26%, Data Operations and Support at 22%, and Data Security and Governance at 18%. Roughly a third of the exam sits in ingestion and transformation, so that is where preparation time pays back most.
Can I retake it if I fail, and how soon?
Yes, after 14 calendar days. AWS states there is no limit on exam attempts but that you must pay the full registration fee for each attempt, so each retake needs its own voucher. After a pass you cannot retake the same exam for two years.
Is DEA-C01 at risk of being retired?
No notice of retirement or of a version update appears on the exam page or the exam guide as of September 2026, and DEA-C01 is listed as a current Associate certification in AWS's exam-guide index. AWS's training blog also lists it among the certifications it recommends to candidates moving on from the retired Machine Learning - Specialty.
