Who sits this exam
AZ-305: Microsoft Azure Solutions Architect Expert is aimed at developers, sysadmins and architects working on cloud platforms. It is an expert-level exam and is usually taken after the associate certification in the same track. Cloud credentials travel further than almost anything else on a Sri Lankan CV, because the platform is identical everywhere.

Microsoft does not publish a fixed count for AZ-305. Its exam-duration page states most certification exams typically contain between 40 and 60 questions, and the number can vary.

700. The AZ-305 exam page states it outright: 'Passing score: 700.' Scores are reported on a scale of 1 to 1,000 and Microsoft notes that as this is a scaled score it may not equal 70% of the points.
Prerequisites
The exam has no booking prerequisite, but the certification does. Microsoft states: 'To become a Microsoft Certified: Azure Solutions Architect Expert, you must earn the Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator Associate certification.' Passing AZ-305 alone does not award the expert credential.

How long it stays valid
12 months from purchase. Book and sit the exam before it expires, a code that has simply run out of time cannot be replaced, so do not buy months ahead of when you plan to use it.
How you redeem it
Book the exam with Pearson VUE as normal, then enter this code at the payment step instead of paying the fee. You choose the date, and whether you sit it at a test centre or from home with OnVUE proctoring.
If the code does not work
If the vendor rejects it when you try to redeem it, tell us straight away and we replace it or refund you in full. Contact us before the voucher’s own expiry date.
If you do not pass
A voucher covers one attempt. A retake needs a new voucher, and the vendor, not us, sets how long you must wait before sitting the exam again. Check the vendor’s retake policy before you book.

Does passing AZ-305 make me an Azure Solutions Architect Expert?
Not on its own. Microsoft states that to become a Microsoft Certified: Azure Solutions Architect Expert you must earn the Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator Associate certification. AZ-305 is the required exam; AZ-104 is the required prerequisite certification. You can sit them in either order, but the expert badge is only issued once both are in place.
How long is AZ-305?
Microsoft does not publish a per-exam duration for AZ-305 on its exam page. Its general exam-duration table sets associate and expert role-based exams at 100 minutes of exam time and 120 minutes of seat time, rising to 120 minutes exam time and 140 minutes seat time for exams that may contain labs. Microsoft says you are given the exam time when you register, and again on the overview pages when you launch it.
What score do I need to pass AZ-305?
700. This is stated outright on the AZ-305 exam page. Scores run on a 1 to 1,000 scale and Microsoft notes that as this is a scaled score it may not equal 70% of the points — the requirement moves with the difficulty of the question set you are served.
How is the exam weighted?
As of the 17 April 2026 English update: Design infrastructure solutions is the largest at 30–35%, Design identity, governance, and monitoring solutions is 25–30%, Design data storage solutions is 20–25%, and Design business continuity solutions is 15–20%. Every question is a design decision, framed against the Azure Well-Architected Framework and the Cloud Adoption Framework for Azure.
Has the exam changed recently, and does that affect other languages?
Yes. Microsoft updated the English version on 17 April 2026. It notes that if a localised version is available it will be updated approximately eight weeks after that date, and warns that localised versions are not always updated on that schedule. If you are sitting AZ-305 in one of the nine non-English languages, check the study guide for which skills-measured version applies to you.
Can I open Microsoft Learn during the exam?
Yes. AZ-305 is a role-based exam, and Microsoft permits access to the learn.microsoft.com domain during associate and expert role-based exams, excluding Q&A, practice assessments and your profile. No extra time is granted and the exam timer keeps running, so treat it as a lookup for the occasional question rather than a substitute for preparation.
Does the expert certification expire?
Yes. Microsoft's renewal page states that role-based and specialty certifications expire unless they are renewed, and that renewal is annual and free. You pass a shorter, unproctored, open-book assessment on Microsoft Learn inside a six-month eligibility window before expiry, and your certification is extended one year from the expiration date — you do not re-sit AZ-305.
