Who sits this exam
AZ-400: Microsoft DevOps Engineer Expert is aimed at developers, sysadmins and architects working on cloud platforms. It is an expert-level exam and is usually taken after the associate certification in the same track. Cloud credentials travel further than almost anything else on a Sri Lankan CV, because the platform is identical everywhere.

700. The AZ-400 exam page states it outright: 'Passing score: 700.' Scores are reported on a 1 to 1,000 scale and Microsoft notes a scaled score may not equal 70% of the points.
Prerequisites
No booking prerequisite for the exam, but the certification requires one. Microsoft states: 'To become a Microsoft Certified: DevOps Engineer Expert, you must earn at least one of the following: Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator Associate, Microsoft Certified: Azure Developer Associate certification.' Azure Developer Associate retired on 31 July 2026, so AZ-104 is the route still open to new candidates.

When it arrives
Emailed to the address on your order once we have confirmed the payment, by a person rather than automatically. In practice that is usually the same day and almost always within one working day. If sourcing a particular voucher is going to take longer, we tell you rather than leaving the order sitting.
How long it stays valid
12 months from purchase. Book and sit the exam before it expires, a code that has simply run out of time cannot be replaced, so do not buy months ahead of when you plan to use it.
How you redeem it
Book the exam with Pearson VUE as normal, then enter this code at the payment step instead of paying the fee. You choose the date, and whether you sit it at a test centre or from home with OnVUE proctoring.
If the code does not work
If the vendor rejects it when you try to redeem it, tell us straight away and we replace it or refund you in full. Contact us before the voucher’s own expiry date.
If you do not pass
A voucher covers one attempt. A retake needs a new voucher, and the vendor, not us, sets how long you must wait before sitting the exam again. Check the vendor’s retake policy before you book.
Changing your mind
Full refund for any reason as long as we have not yet sent the code, including if you realise you have ordered the wrong exam, which is easy to do when codes look alike. It maps to DevOps engineer, platform engineer, site reliability engineer and release engineer work — Microsoft's own profile has the holder on cross-functional teams with developers, site reliability engineers, Azure administrators and security engineers. Because Microsoft explicitly expects experience with both GitHub and Azure DevOps, it is one of the few vendor certifications that validates both toolchains at once, which is useful in organisations that have work split across the two.

Does passing AZ-400 alone make me a DevOps Engineer Expert?
No. Microsoft requires you to also hold at least one of Azure Administrator Associate or Azure Developer Associate. That matters right now, because Azure Developer Associate retired on 31 July 2026 — so for anyone starting fresh, AZ-104 is the prerequisite that is still attainable, even though the DevOps Engineer Expert page still lists both options.
How is AZ-400 weighted?
Lopsidedly, and deliberately. As of the 27 July 2026 English update, Design and implement build and release pipelines is 50–55% of the exam on its own. The remainder splits into Design and implement processes and communications (10–15%), Design and implement a source control strategy (10–15%), Develop a security and compliance plan (10–15%) and Implement an instrumentation strategy (5–10%).
Does the exam test GitHub or Azure DevOps?
Both. Microsoft states candidates should have experience implementing both GitHub and Azure DevOps solutions, and the preparation content covers continuous integration with Azure Pipelines and GitHub Actions side by side, along with working with Git for enterprise DevOps. Preparing only for one toolchain leaves the largest domain half-covered.
How long is the AZ-400 exam?
Microsoft does not publish a per-exam duration for AZ-400. Its general table sets associate and expert role-based exams at 100 minutes of exam time and 120 minutes of seat time, or 120 and 140 minutes for exams that may contain labs. The exact time is confirmed when you register and shown again on the launch screens.
What is the pass mark?
700, stated outright on the AZ-400 exam page. Microsoft reports scores on a 1 to 1,000 scale and notes that as this is a scaled score it may not equal 70% of the points — the number of points needed shifts with the difficulty of the questions you are given.
The exam changed in July 2026. Does that apply if I sit it in another language?
Not immediately. Microsoft updates the English version first and says a localised version, if available, will be updated approximately eight weeks later, while warning that this schedule is not always met. AZ-400 is available in ten languages; if you are sitting a localised version, check the study guide for which skills-measured version applies.
Does DevOps Engineer Expert expire?
Yes. Microsoft's renewal page states role-based and specialty certifications expire unless renewed, and that renewal is annual and free. You pass a shorter, unproctored, open-book assessment on Microsoft Learn during the six-month eligibility window before expiry, which extends the certification one year from the expiration date — you do not re-sit AZ-400.
