If the code does not work

If you do not pass
A voucher covers one attempt. A retake needs a new voucher, and the vendor, not us, sets how long you must wait before sitting the exam again. Check the vendor’s retake policy before you book.
Changing your mind
Full refund for any reason as long as we have not yet sent the code, including if you realise you have ordered the wrong exam, which is easy to do when codes look alike. Where it leads
This is a narrow, deep credential rather than a broad one, and its value is highest for developers already working on Cosmos DB workloads. The October 2026 rewrite repositions it as an AI-application credential, which makes it more relevant to teams building retrieval and agent features. Note that Microsoft is also moving it from Specialty to Associate level on the same date, so it will sit alongside the associate tier on a CV rather than above it.

Pearson VUE's published Microsoft price list puts Sri Lanka at 58 USD for a role-based exam, with a 32 USD academic rate, against 165 USD and 91 USD for the same exam proctored in the United States. Microsoft delivers exams either at a Pearson VUE test centre or online to your home or office under OnVUE proctoring, and notes that online exams are available in most but not all countries and regions — confirm availability with Pearson VUE when you book. DP-420 is worth buying only if you already have a Cosmos DB workload to practise against; if not, DP-300 or DP-700 are better value. If you buy now, check with Pearson VUE which version of the exam your booking date falls under, because the English content changes on 6 October 2026. The exam is not offered in Sinhala or Tamil; if it is not available in your preferred language you can request an additional 30 minutes.

No. The exam code stays DP-420 and it does not appear on Microsoft's credential retirement page. What changes on 6 October 2026 is the certification's name and level — it becomes Microsoft Certified: Azure Cosmos DB AI Developer Associate instead of Azure Cosmos DB Developer Specialty — and the English version of the certification is updated the same day.
What is actually changing in the exam content?
A lot. Microsoft's study guide change log removes the 'Design and implement data distribution' and 'Maintain an Azure Cosmos DB solution' groups, removes server-side JavaScript programming and multi-region write, and adds a new 20-25% group covering full-text and vector search, hybrid search, RAG, agent memory stores and Cosmos DB mirroring into Microsoft Fabric. The audience profile is marked as a Major change.
If I pass before October 2026, does my certification still count?
Yes. Microsoft's note about the change says plainly: 'No action is required.' The exam code is unchanged and the credential is being renamed rather than withdrawn.
How long is the exam and what do I need to pass?
100 minutes of exam time, with 120 minutes of seat time per Microsoft's duration table for an associate exam without labs, and a scaled score of 700 out of 1,000 to pass. Microsoft does not publish a fixed question count, saying only that most of its exams typically contain 40 to 60 questions.
Are there prerequisites?
No formal prerequisite is listed. Microsoft's updated audience profile does expect experience developing applications in C# or Python, plus familiarity with Azure services, generative AI concepts, retrieval-based systems and application development practices.
How soon can I retake DP-420 if I fail?
24 hours before the second attempt, then a 14-day wait before each further attempt, up to five attempts within 12 months of your first try. Microsoft states you must pay to retake the exam.

Yes — the certification page shows a Renewal Frequency of 12 months. Microsoft's renewal page states renewals are free: you pass a short, unproctored, open-book assessment on Microsoft Learn before expiry, so you only buy the voucher once.
