Common starting points

Start on the foundational exam. It is the cheaper, shorter paper, and both vendors write it for people who can describe the cloud rather than operate it.

Side by side

For a cloud generalist at your level, the AWS route is the cheaper of the two: Rs 24,700 for 2 exams against Rs 32,491 on Azure, a gap of Rs 7,791. Cost is one input though, not the decision: pick the cloud the employers you are applying to actually run.

AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner
Start here: the cheaper, shorter paper, written for people without hands-on cloud work behind them.
AWS aims this at people who can describe the AWS cloud rather than build on it, so it suits a first certification with no hands-on job behind it.

Checked a second way: converting the whole $250.00 in one multiply gives Rs 85,178, the same figure. The two routes agree.

Same level, different flavour: SOA-C03 AWS Certified CloudOps Engineer - Associate.

  • Every AWS certification is valid for three years. You recertify by passing the current version of the exam, and AWS gives you a 50% discount voucher on your next exam once you pass one.
  • Fail and you wait 14 calendar days, then pay the full fee again. There is no cap on attempts. Once you pass, you cannot sit the same exam again for two years.

Checked a second way: converting the whole $102.00 in one multiply gives Rs 34,753, a difference of Rs 1 from rounding each exam separately. The two routes agree.

Same level, different flavour: DP-900 Microsoft Azure Data Fundamentals.

  • Microsoft prints no fee on its exam pages: the price depends on the country the exam is proctored in. The dollar figures here are the Sri Lanka rows of Pearson VUE's Microsoft price list, so treat them as the list price before tax and before any promotion.
  • On at least one exam here, paying the vendor by card works out cheaper than a rupee voucher at today's rate. The plan keeps the cheaper route for each exam rather than pushing the voucher.
  • Fundamentals certifications never expire. Role-based and specialty certifications expire after 12 months unless you renew them, and renewing is free: an unproctored online assessment on Microsoft Learn, not another paid exam.
  • Fail and you can retake 24 hours later. The wait grows for later attempts, and each attempt is paid for separately.

Both are foundational papers and neither is a prerequisite for anything. The real difference is the exam room: AZ-900 is 45 minutes and the credential never expires, while Cloud Practitioner is 90 minutes, 65 questions and runs out after three years.

Sources cited

Exam length, question count, passing score and renewal rules: the vendors' own certification pages and exam guides, read 2026-10-11. AWS fees: aws.amazon.com exam pricing. Microsoft publishes no fee on its exam pages, so the dollar figures are the Sri Lanka rows of Pearson VUE's Microsoft price list. Exchange rate: the stored USD mid-rate series behind the LKR exchange rate tool. Voucher prices are read live from this site's store. Microsoft question counts are shown as a range because Microsoft publishes no per-exam figure.

How it works

The planner holds two different kinds of fact and keeps them apart, because they carry different weight.

The exam facts are the vendors' own. Each AWS certification page prints an exam overview block: Cloud Practitioner is “Foundational, 90 minutes, 65 questions, 100 USD” and Solutions Architect Associate is “Associate, 130 minutes, 65 questions, 150 USD”. The pass mark comes from each certification's own exam guide PDF, which reports results as a scaled score of 100 to 1,000with a stated minimum: 700 for the foundational exams, 720 for the associate exams, 750 for professional and for Security Specialty. Microsoft works the other way round. Its exam pages print no fee at all, only “price based on the country or region in which the exam is proctored”, and no question count, because one policy page covers every exam: fundamentals run 45 minutes with 65 minutes of seat time, associate and expert role-based exams run 100 to 120 minutes, and “most Microsoft Certification exams typically contain between 40 and 60 questions”. Microsoft's pass mark is 700 out of 1,000 on every exam it sells. Where a vendor publishes no figure, this tool shows none.

The sequence is this site's mappingof a job goal onto those vendor ladders, and it is labelled as such on every row. Your experience level does not change which exams exist, only which ones are marked to book now. A student starts on the foundational paper because both vendors write it for people who can describe the cloud rather than operate it. Someone already in an IT job skips it, since neither vendor requires it, and plans the associate and the professional or expert paper together. Where a vendor names the next step itself, the reason line quotes the vendor: AWS's Data Engineer page points data professionals at Security Specialty.

The rupee figures. Each exam is converted once: card cost = round(fee in USD x mid rate x (1 + card margin)). The mid rate is the latest stored USD rate from the same daily series behind the LKR exchange rate tool, and the margin is what your bank adds over it on a dollar transaction, commonly 2% to 4% in Sri Lanka. The plan total is the sum of those per-exam figures, so it can sit a rupee or two away from converting the whole dollar total in one multiply. The planner computes that second figure too and reports the difference, which is its own check on the arithmetic.

Voucher prices are read live from this site's store and are not assumed to be cheaper. For AWS they are far cheaper at today's rate. For Microsoft fundamentals they are not: USD 44 on a card lands below the fundamentals voucher, so the planner keeps that rung on Microsoft's own checkout and says why. The cheapest-route total takes the lower of the two prices for each exam, not the lower of the two totals. The dataset covers 10 AWS and 14 Azure exams across 6 goals, and every row links to the vendor page it came from.

Worked examples

Rate Rs 330.79, card margin 3%

Student aiming at a cloud admin job, AWS route

  1. Effective rate: 330.79 x 1.03 = Rs 340.7137 per USD
  2. CLF-C02 (Cloud Practitioner): USD 100 x 340.7137 = Rs 34,071
  3. SOA-C03 (CloudOps Engineer Associate): USD 150 x 340.7137 = Rs 51,107
  4. Card total: Rs 85,178
  5. Check: USD 250 x 340.7137 = Rs 85,178, the same figure
  6. Vouchers here: Rs 9,700 + Rs 15,000 = Rs 24,700
  7. Cheapest route: Rs 24,700, saving Rs 60,478 or 71.0%

The case where a voucher is the wrong answer

Same student, Azure route

  1. AZ-900: USD 44 x 340.7137 = Rs 14,991 by card, voucher Rs 17,500
  2. AZ-104: USD 58 x 340.7137 = Rs 19,761 by card, voucher Rs 17,500
  3. Card total: Rs 34,752
  4. Check: USD 102 x 340.7137 = Rs 34,753, a Rs 1 rounding gap over two exams
  5. Cheapest route: Rs 14,991 by card + Rs 17,500 voucher = Rs 32,491
  6. Saving: Rs 2,261 or 6.5%, and only because AZ-104 is where the voucher wins

Edge case: the fundamentals rung drops out, and one exam publishes no duration

Already working in IT, cloud admin, Azure

  1. AZ-900 moves to optional, so it leaves the total
  2. AZ-104: Rs 19,761 by card, voucher Rs 17,500
  3. AZ-305: Rs 19,761 by card, voucher Rs 17,500
  4. Card total: Rs 39,522, cheapest route Rs 35,000
  5. Saving: Rs 4,522 or 11.4%
  6. Time shows as 100 min+ because Microsoft prints no duration for AZ-305, only the 100 to 120 minute band

Four Azure certifications retired in 2026

This is the part most certification guides have not caught up with. Microsoft's own retirement schedule lists all four of these as gone within the last year, so a path that ends at any of them is a path to nothing:

CertificationExamRetiredWhat to sit instead
Azure Data Scientist AssociateDP-1001 June 2026DP-700 (Fabric Data Engineer Associate)
Azure AI Engineer AssociateAI-10230 June 2026AI-200 or AI-103
Azure Developer AssociateAZ-20431 July 2026AI-200 (Azure AI Cloud Developer Associate)
Azure Security Engineer AssociateAZ-50031 August 2026SC-500 (Cloud and AI Security Engineer Associate)

Two more renames catch people out at booking. The AI-900 exam was retired on 30 June 2026 and replaced by AI-901 for the same Azure AI Fundamentals certification, so book AI-901. On the AWS side, SysOps Administrator Associate became CloudOps Engineer Associate and the old version closed on 29 September 2025, so search for SOA-C03.

Every exam fact above was read from these pages on 2026-10-11. Both vendors reshuffle certifications several times a year, and 2026 alone retired four Azure role-based certifications, so this page is re-checked quarterly and after any retirement announcement.
